BIOGRAPHY
Whispers had followed Am through his youngest years, superstitious things that gave everyone around him pause, that made them look at him too close. He learned early to keep his head down, avert the eyes that people had once claimed held darkness. Darkness? No. Too shrewd for someone so young? Certainly. And so he ducked them, trained them to the ground and replaced them with his ears, learning everything he could, and often, things no one wanted him to know.
When Aunt Sarah arrived at the orphanage, another young boy in tow, he knew he had an opportunity, and he used it to his young advantage. It allowed him an escape from his dingy reality, thrusting him into a new place. His skills were put to use on the woman who had adopted him, charming and beguiling her, gratitude overshadowing everything else about him enough that it lulled her into complacency. She had succeeded.
He and Si had perfected it, quick glances, fleeting touches, perfect synchronicity, until they were nearly indistinguishable. It disconcerted the people around them, forced them to either look away, or watch so closely they missed anything important. Am was content to let Si lead, always understanding the boiling hated for Aunt Sarah that led him, angry for something that Am would never understand.
He didn’t care. He helped cover for Si, fueling people’s easily misguided minds with well placed comments. And then being thrust so far into the future, her fortune at their disposal, it opened a new world. He found he liked the opportunity, the anonymity that came with it, and he set himself to finding every way to use it to his advantage.
CONNECTIONS
Sean Cantaras: The sight of him is familiar to Am, but it never failed to make him inwardly sneer. On the outside, he looked every bit the urchin, but he had a disgusting noble streak that Am has no way to comprehend.
John Prince: Being the man’s paralegal is a means to an end, and Am knows very well when not to bite the hand that feeds him. He makes his employer look as good as he is capable, anything lacking is on the man himself.
