Ivan: have you ever fallen in love?

Ivan swirls his Scotch, a thoughtful smile on his face.

"I suppose it depends on what you mean. Have I experienced the physiological responses that usually convince someone they're in love? Of course. Little Jackie makes me feel that way every day, doesn't he? But passionate love is impermanent and unsustainable. No one can maintain that level of arousal. Not indefinitely."

He looks up.

"If you're asking if I've ever been in love--or at least, had the desire for sustained, companionate love--the answer is yes. Once. It was in med school. I was younger then. Stupid, I suppose. Or he was. He didn't understand what I had to offer. I think now--I think he might feel differently now. He might understand that I'm not quite what he thought. That he shouldn't have underestimated me."

He takes a sip from his tumbler, and his smile widens.

"I suppose it's too late for us now. I'll live."
