regarding the portrait... I always saw it as because stevenson rejected his own father by becoming a writer instead of an engineer and also by marrying against his family's wishes so the act of tearing apart the portrait of a father is symbolic of rejecting the ideals that societal and familial values expect from you and creating your own path 🤷🏿♀️
