tenzen and liande are actually from the same cloister, tenzen is just older and wasn't there before liande officially started serving. they're overseen by an imposing matriarch with extremely strict rules around purity and Being Good Jades, etc., which tenzen never really vibed with.
rhonan struck a ""deal"" w/the matriarch ages back so that she will accept viable eggs from the ranch (or take the grubs if they hatch first). through that deal he got access to tenzen, who at the time was chafing at the chance to leave the caverns for realsies and didn't grasp the doublespeak that all of rhonan's contracts have.
the matriarch is/was totally aware of what was going to happen though... she sees it as a necessary evil to protect her "good ones".
liande is... not a "good one". like tenzen, he wants more out of life and sometimes that involves being a bit of a slut lmao - matriarch Does Not Like That, so liande is in locked chastity, unable to scratch that itch he desperately needs tending to.
