Marian had found the letter on her windowsill. At first, she thought it was a stray note she had left for herself, as she often did, but when she picked it up and read it, she felt a chill go through her. She didn’t recognize the script, but she felt like she knew it, and the parchment tingled in her hands.

We both know there is something a little… ‘different’ about you. This message is an invite to a place where you can be yourself. No humans are allowed, In fact humans can not even see the location. Go to the Selphia district and look for an old abandoned church. Enter and knock on the wall behind the altar. (Watch your step) For your first time showing up at the location, you must prove yourself. If you do, you will be then be given a membership. You may attend any day between 8pm-2am

Do not show this message to anyone, especially a human. We want a safe environment for all magicals to be themselves. If you try to bring in a human, or show this message to one you will be marked and punished.

It wouldn’t surprise her that there were people out there who knew who she was, especially if they were mystic. But why reach out to her? She didn’t want anything to do with other magical beings. Be herself? Marian was not a magical being.

Marian leaned back on the side of her bed. What would she do? She didn’t want to go, but holding it in her hands, the way it felt, that it was magical, she felt like she had to get up and go to the nearby church right then.

In the Back Room | Felicity

Felicity Benn has a brilliant, fantastic idea.

Let’s start with the end result. There’s a back room in Konohana Restaurant. There’s a locked door behind the reception desk and to the left, wooden with squeaky hinges and a chain and bolt. If you say the password quietly, you’ll get in if someone else is in there. (It’s a secret to everybody but there’s a key hidden in the nice flower arrangement on the shelf beside the door. Just for emergencies.) Inside is what used to be an old storeroom. It has a round table and chairs in it and other materials as well. 

What does Felicity want? A space for people who are only human. To get away from all the fear and mistrust and not knowing for sure whether the person next to you is human or not. Of course, a group to also take a stand against all this magic in Altelia.

Magic is dangerous. It is harmful and it hurts people. Think of the person pushed off the mountain by a witch or those three burned apartments... they have to take a stand against this. Humans don’t have magic! They don’t have any way to protect themselves! Humans are at a disadvantage and it isn’t fair that magical people can just run about with those powers.

Therefore, Felicity is setting up a group. Humans Against Magic. HAM, she supposes. Although where the meat-themed acronym came from, she doesn’t know... divine inspiration?

Anyway, she’ll find some trust-worthy people to invite to the group. They can have meetings every week, Tuesday at 6pm. They can work on forming a plan and a community to fight against this threat to Altelia.

I’ve heard about magic being in places it shouldn’t, like Beach Day, and that party I didn’t go to, and honestly it’s a bunch of bull.

Did I act strangely towards that girl on Beach Day even though I have no idea who she is? Yeah, but I’m not really surprised with the crazy embarrassing shit I’ve done... And, who knows, maybe it was my own magic! In which case I should lock myself up in my room for, like, a week, but I kind of have a job and no vacation days... Shit. I haven’t been this embarrassed in a while.

On that note, I’m also kind of upset I didn’t win the swimsuit competition. I don’t even remember if I collected my consolation prize. Gods, why am I so ditzy!

(In all honesty I’m disgusted that someone is meddling in such a way. What’s the deal? What’s so funny?! Is it cool as fuck and do I wish I could do it? Uh... No! And that’s why it’s a load of bull!)

But that party, too? I heard there was a fire there, so the same person must be up to all this. It’s so unfair! What the hell is the government going to do about this? Is Altelia city just being blown over like nothing’s happening? (Not that I blame them, I guess, this place always has been rather disconnected.)

Marian stopped writing? What was the point?

Some time ago...

Where no one can see, there is a small book, hand-binded, with endless pages. It records anything the shrine keeper had to say about the shrine, or whatever else she may feel, as she is the shrine keeper and anything pertaining to her pertains to the shrine.

Some time ago, I went outside. I didn’t have any intentions; I have no purpose there. But the gate had been acting strange. It flashed light, and when I investigated, it let on to a location foreign to me. People wore different clothes, lived in different homes, and spoke different words. I can not help but wonder how long it had been since anyone I have known has lived. The spirits are all unfamiliar. After being shown around by a woman called Felicity, I went back to where I first found myself, and went back through the portal. A simple mirror.

When I reentered that world, I could sense something had burned, and I could feel impure spirits nearby. It is saddening that flame be summoned and used in such a way. That same day, two men were in the room the portal took me to. I was questioned, taken away, and questioned further. Those rooms were called "apartments" and they were part of a business. The people who questioned me were “police” and “doctors.” I was asked on lots of information, including my name, age, and ancestry. Unfortunately I knew almost none of those things, and of the answers I gave, I only seemed to confuse everyone. Though this world does hold magic, my world seems beyond their grasps. I at least told the people that my name was Emiko. But they needed more than that. I decided on Shimizu. It at least has meaning to me.

I was told I had “amnesia,” and given an “identity”. Emiko Shimizu. Roughly 26 years old. 5 feet, 6 inches. 116 pounds. Asian. Whatever any of that may mean.

The best thing to come of this is that I was not forced to leave the apartment. I do not know what would come of me if I was never able to go back there. I would be trapped, without knowing where the portal was originally supposed to be. I was given a key, but I don’t really have a use for it. Much like the portal here, I have my own means.

However, while my duty lies in the shrine, I feel as if I have obligations here, especially considering the eerie magical auras.

Marian turned over the page. Her throat closed up as she wrote.

        I am a witch.         Well, even if she was wrong about some things, I believed her.         I am a dangerous person.

She picked up the pen. Did she really write that? She held her chin in her hands. After a moment, she scribbled over it and wrote again:

        I am not interested in politics at all, and I didn't feel concerned at all, but I didn’t want this girl to be mayor. But I didn’t agree with the other people I heard were running, either. I went home feeling terrible. I just wanted things to stay like they were before. That felt safest. For me. For Granny, who is a much better person than me.         So people have elected a new mayor. The guy who won used to be the police chief, and he seems alright... Not hostile. Actually I think he still is the police chief. But he did seem like he would keep the city safe.

        Is what I thought.         It was on the news. His inauguration speech. Granny had it on the radio, and on the TV, too. Everyone seemed to here it. Someone hijacked it with magic! Granny and I knew it. I might be as useless at magic as a human, but I don’t think I’m in danger. But I don’t want this to be happening.

        Granny might know what’s going on, but I just want to lay low. I don’t know anyone who’s involved in anything like this. I hope.

July 7th         This is something I have not touched since my high school days, and I'm worried to even look back on it. Even then, I did not write as often as I did as a child.         But I have this ache, a feeling that I have to write down my thoughts. Okay... so I have to get this all down.

        When I heard people were outed at the Goddess Festival, I was uneasy. All I could think was how stupid those people must have been. Why would they want to do that? People have suspected me all my life, and here I am trying to fit in, but now that everyone is aware and uneasy, everything is more difficult more me! I'm so... stressed out these days. And it looked like the mayor was, too, Gill or whoever, because he stepped down. I’m not interested in politics, so I didn’t really pay attention, but it really added to the chaos.         A few days later, I was passing by the square when I noticed some commotion. In the middle of it, there was a frail-looking girl on a soapbox, passionately going on about all... this. She looked like she was about to fall off her box, but she went on. Mystical people are murderous and a danger to society. The city belonged to humans, she said. Some people agreed, some people didn’t. I am

The Living Descendant | Felicity

In the midst of day where the sky is clear and the sun is relentless, a dark-haired girl appears out of the blue and ends up in the City Plaza. Stepping close to the rebuilt City Hall, she places a hand on the cold granite and looks solemnly at the building.

Then she turns, because it is the day before Opening Day and this woman has a mission. Another speech to give to Altelia as the passer-bys pass by, for all the good it will do both her and them.

“Hello, Altelia. Here we are again.

Things are different now from when I made my last speech. As you know, I ran for the Mayorship and well, I wasn’t voted in. My congratulations to the new Mayor Harris and I wish him all the best in his new duties. This does not mean I am abandoning Altelia. This is why I am here today. To warn you all.

Not only are there violent people among us... there is pure evil.

The magical beings among us have proved that they are violent people with intentions that cannot be trusted! Last week at the bazaar, I was attacked unjustly by a dwarf named Zaid. He is a dwarf that is hiding among us, that lives among us! I ended up with a concussion and a black eye. This is proof of how violent magical beings are, that they would attack an ill girl for no reason!

Of course, there is most likely a more pressing attack on your mind. Two apartments were burned down in the middle of the night! First Violet’s, then Allen’s. Two of our citizens have been attacked! And who was the cause of this?

I have plans for you, Altelia. That was what the voice that interrupted Harris’ initiation speech said. There is someone out there, planning directly against us! There is no doubt that they are the person who has committed these two crimes of arson. There is no doubt that they are a magical being, since they spoke of the Harvest King, that wretched man who seeks to disrupt us all. What other threat did they give? I am the one that will deliver the revenge you humans so richly deserve. A clear statement of the magical being’s violent agenda against humanity. The pure evil that is among us.

Just like the other magical beings... there is no doubt that this person lives among us. Who is it?! Who is this awful person who interrupted Harris’ speech and burned down two apartments?! They are among us. They can be anyone. They may even be here today, listening to me.

I am not going to ask for them to reveal themselves, because I know they will not heed me. But here is my warning, Altelia! In these troubled times, we must unite against the magical beings! We cannot trust them any longer! They cannot live among us any more when they are also burning down our apartments and attacking our citizens!

If we do not unite, Altelia, if we do not take action against the magical beings to prevent any more violence from them... Altelia, we will all burn.”

With those words, the girl leaves the Plaza.

iN tHe DaRk | Felicity

There is an apartment block where the sun shines. It is night and there is no sun now. There are four floors. There is a second floor. There is a third room on the second floor. There is a woman sleeping in her bed. A human.

There is another woman. Outside. Waiting.

Is she truly human, in this moment?

There is another woman and her eyes gleam in the dark. Her hair is dark her skin is pale she is dying. There is a heart within that woman and it does not beat on her command. Lungs kidneys brain blood she does not own them now.

There is fire in her soul.

There is a closed door. There is a open door. There are two women. The fire is outside her now. The fire consumes. Eats its own heart out. Burns. There is  smoke and it drifts out. So yellow. So blue. Destruction. So beautiful. One room. One victim.

There is a woman outside the door now. 

Her eyes flicker open. Felicity stands in the hallway and does not remember how she got there. What...? What’s going on here...?
