So it turns out the N64 Animal Crossing cartridge battery must just save the time, because it stopped back in 2014, but the old owner’s save file is still there. Before deleting the town, I set the clock to the correct date and went to see how badly the town went to hell. First thing a villager says to me:

“...348 weeks, huh.”

“80 months doesn’t sound too bad, but if you say 348 weeks, doesn’t it sound super long?”

I figured it’s finally time I check out the original N64 Animal Crossing! Quite the interesting experience. It feels so weird playing what’s essentially the GameCube version I love with an N64 controller. It feels much more Japanese with the shrine and the postal symbol over the post office. (Pardon the awful pictures.)

Before starting my own town, I figured I’d check out the previous owner’s town. Hiroyuki stopped playing in 2003 and didn’t get past the tutorial. I’m guessing he started over before selling this. Thank god it’s not my town, too, because this is the worst layout I’ve ever seen.

The shop is in 1-1, and there’s no bridge over the river there. I honestly thought it was inaccessible at first. The only way to it is behind the house in 3-1. Unbelievable.

The other thing that surprised me was Boris sporting a different design. I had no idea it was changed for the international release. How arbitrary. He was rocking that eyeshadow!

The clock thought it was January 9th, 2014, so it still works I guess, just horribly out of sync. I own e+ too, which has many more features, so there’s not much of a reason to play this barebones one without the museum, Able Sisters, or the like, but I might mess around with it for kicks anyway. Always exciting starting a new town. The villager houses are still the most interestingly decorated in the series, so here are some of Hiroyuki’s villagers’ houses.

I’ve never met Tutu before! She’s so cute! She basically called me a dumbass, how precious.

She then gifted me a painting during the tutorial job??? I didn’t know they could give such rare items. There isn’t even a museum in this game. What a waste. Then I got an asteroid from the lost and found?? So my humble house has only two items besides the tape deck, and they’re those. Incredible.

Tutu said “Hello” to me, and said she’s been studying a bit of English! She’s so adorable. One of my favorite villagers now.

Her Japanese name is Ren’nyuu, which means “condensed milk.” Doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue in English, but it’s a fitting name for a white polar bear.
