Elegance And Pearls. DIY Ideas.
I haven't had a Southern accent since I was like, 4. (Mostly Arkansas, since that's where my dad's family is from.)
As a kid, I used to tease my Dad for dropping back into a southern drawl whenever getting on the phone with his family.
Dad: [Midwest accent] Hello?
Dad: [Thick drawl] Oh howdy there, Daddy, how y'all been doing?
Now it's come back to bite me in the butt.
Because guess who can't watch her roommates play Final Fantasy 15 without accidentally slipping into that old accent? And then getting STUCK in that accent or finding it sneaking back in when I least expect it?
Arrrrgh.
(And as far as we can tell, it only affects me, not the rest of the Crew. So not fair.)
Me realizing that “ain’t never” is a double negative and I should probably stop saying stuff like that
rambling about my accent under the cut. this is super self-indulgent. no need to read it.
okay, so watching that dialect video got me thinking about my accent (again) and i thought i’d share how i say some things. i’m just writing these words as i’d say them, or as i'd write them in text messages to my sister, not in the ipa because i’m too lazy for that.
words like wouldn’t, shouldn’t, and couldn’t get shortened to ‘wunt’, ‘shunt’, and ‘cunt’. i’m not swearing at you, i promise.
anything / nothing / something = owt / nowt / summat
we also retained ‘thee’ and ‘thou’ but where i’m from ‘thou’ sounds more like ‘thar’. i’m not sure if that’s a regional thing for my hometown or a wider county thing. one example of ‘thee’ is when ‘yourself’ becomes ‘thissen’. another example is that ‘i wouldn’t do that if i were you’ (is that even grammatically correct? who knows) becomes ‘a wunt do tha if ar wo thee’. also, sithee (as in ‘see thee’) means goodbye.
if it’s raining heavily, i’d say it was ‘siling it darn’. siling is a fun word. it’s one of my favourite dialect words.
a kerb is called a ‘corsey edge’ which is often shorted to just ‘corsey’. i do not know why. i have found no answers for this.
when i was a kid i used to ‘laik’ rounders. ‘laik’ means play.
i’d prononuce ‘right’ as ‘reyt’. light is pronounced as ‘leet’ which rhymes with ‘meet’. night sounds like ‘neat’.
weirdly, i pronounce ‘meet’ in the normal way but ‘meat’ as ‘meyt’.
water rhymes with ‘matter’
junk food is ‘ket’. not related to the drug. sweets or candy are ‘spice’ but i’m not sure if that’s a dialect thing. i think that’s a british thing. correct me if i’m wrong.
‘die’ sounds like ‘dee’ and ‘died’ sounds like ‘deed’. this really confused the people i went to uni with. i once said ‘oh, a feel like am deeing’ and i got a blank look. fun times.
finally, our county motto is:
“ear all, see all, say nowt; eyt all, sup all, pay nowt; and if ivver tha does owt fer nowt - allus do it fer thissen”
which is clearly self-explanatory.
Well I give everyone an American English accent outta habit so what’s your accent???
Ah! I’m from the north of the UK!
Some words I do sounds a bit American but generally I have a pretty neutral northern accent that people have a hard time placing, except for some words that come out very scouse which give me away. There’s a also like the tiniest tiniest bit of welsh in there because thats where my mum’s family are from!
Whenever I’m writing dialogue I have to remind myself that the majority of my readers are Americans and therefore don’t talk like me, so like I’ll find myself about to have the reader say “aye right” and then I’m like wait my actual readers wouldn’t say that, they would say “yeah right” and it’s such a struggle 😂
I FEEL THIS
Once upon a time I couldn’t remember the English word for jacket so I just put sacou and figured I would go back and fix it later but I FORGOT and I got a bunch of messages like “wut” and it was so embarrassing 🤦♀️😂
Me and my sister went to Korea and I noticed that the way they express awe or surprise sounds different than the American “whoaaa” (obvs) but what I didn’t realize was that we also started making their same noise until we were at a horse show watching the acrobats performing tricks. I caught myself going “ooooo” along with the crowd and was like wait a minute what’s happening here?? 😂
THIS IS SO FUNNY
JESS YOU RUINED EVERYTHING no i'm just kidding i lvoe you so much but now my accent challenge sounds even more horrific compared to you talking and i'M CRYING YOUR VOICE IS SO NICE LET ME LISTEN TO IT 24/7
Nooooo I’m sure your accent challenge is really great! But omg, I’m glad you like my accent, please don’t cry!
