It’s been ages since I posted an #accessible cottagecore photo not because I forgot about it, but because I literally haven’t come across any. But today I finally found one!
This is a photo by Carina Olander of a room in Mia Ahlskog’s house in Ostrobothnia, Finland.
Of course it has my favourite: a view of trees out the window, but it also has: NO CLUTTER! Nothing to knock over! Nothing to get in the way! (Well, OK, that armchair is in the way of that cupboard, but I can’t use low cupboards like that anyway, so I don’t care.) In this room I could actually do shit and move around without any worries!
Also check the lighting: the writing desk is lit directly by the window and a lamp over your left side (move lamp to the right if you’re left-handed), as is the reading chair. Not sure if the desk is at a good height for a wheelchair user. Where do they keep their pens and stuff? You’d have to lean over the desk to open the window, which can be a problem.
And the chairs! Both of them sturdy and supportive and comfortable. It would be nice if the armchair had a place to put down a cup, but look, it has that practical little pocket hanging off it for pencils or books or snacks or your phone or whatever.
Those top shelves are too high to be reachable, but the rest of them are great, and I love the drawers: so much easier to access than cupboards! And they have labels on them! Too small to read easily, but great for people who have trouble remembering where things go. They look old, but actually this house was built just a few years ago, so chances are they have modern rolly/slidy things inside that make them nice and easy to push in and out.
Even the ceiling fixture look relatively easy to clean.
Bonus points: radiator under the desk to keep you toasty in winter, pretty earthy green colour, wide rustic floorboards and ceiling boards, a shit-ton of books, Arts & Crafts-esque upholstery, adjustable lamps.
Unfortunately it loses massive points for being in an attic: really not so accessible after all.
