[[Following on from This Thread of Long Ago - inspired by this photo of the Titanosaurus fossil, and arctic dinosaurs.]] 

She was up on the fallen log with one stride and away again on the next, a small indent on the softened bark left to mark her passage. Trees whispered, the wind faint behind the sound of her own breath. Once, these forests had spread forever, coated most of the country with a dense carpet of green - today only patches like this one remained, hemmed in between fields dotted with cattle and white sheep, themselves bound by low fences of stone.

Thera paused on the muddy trail. The wood was silent bar the rustle of leaves, and her senses tuned to sounds only she could hear. Small quivering lights, minds hidden all around her - rabbits, foxes, voles. Even the badgers, if angrily, had gone to ground.

Alright, she sent quietly, as the frightened thoughts began to turn her way, Where is it?

Off to the east, something suddenly snapped - the sound of wood breaking, the crash of a tree fall - and in that same direction, something roared.

... Oh.

She hesitated a second, perhaps two, listening and calming her breath from more than her previous run. That sounded ... large. Thera set off again toward the sounds, slower and far more cautious.

Somewhere ahead she could hear the creature snuffling and muttering to itself, and as she drew closer became aware of the alien glow of its mind. Again she paused, back to a tree and eyes half-closed as she examined it more closely. Different, and unfamiliar, but little more so than the beasts she'd encountered on Asgard and elsewhere - the dialect might vary, but the basic sense still remained.

Confused, irritated - thankfully not hungry, though that might not be too far away. Could've been worse. Another urge, less defined and perhaps more primal, nudging at the rest from below ... Thera frowned a little, then shook her head. She would worry about that later. For now ... here went nothing. She took in another deep breath, and carefully extended her mind. Hello, there.

The muttering abruptly stopped. Caution followed, defense, though not bare aggression. Yet. Another breath, and Thera stepped out from behind the tree, putting herself plainly in the animal's sight - and it in hers. Oh yes, that was very large. The teeth were the first thing to strike the eye, the claws next - its size roughly that of an elephant, though with the huge shoulders of a predator. Smooth, mid-grey skin.

She raised a hand, palm out, projecting reassurance and calm. It's alright. I don't want to hurt you. I'm a friend. Possibly the only one it was going to have in this world. Another step closer, hoping that presenting herself so, in full sight and making no hostile move, would help convey that message through (though to herself, in the back of her mind, she knew Loki would be having a heart attack).

The Frost Beast stood where it was, small beady eyes squinting at her and long tail twitching just a bit. Thera stopped, hand still lifted, doing her best to radiate calm; if it decided to attack, at least she'd have an flash of warning.

Yes ... gently. That's the way ...

BAWWWW! The sudden sound startled her, but the moment passed at once, the beast roaring and shaking its great head. BAWWWW!

Too hot!

I know. Thera projected understanding, carefully muffling a smile; she wasn't sure how it might interpret any display of teeth.

Too hot, prey too small! Huge clawed feet stamped like a toddler. Not like! Going home!

Her immediate thought was of Jotunheim, and to reassure that she would try to help. But instead she hesitated - the feeling behind those thoughts didn’t seem quite ... right. Where ... ?

Home. There was the impression of white tundra, the sense of direction to the north. Old home.

Old ... ? Thera's eyes widened. It was an advantage of the Guardian's way - words could mislead, but thoughts and senses rarely did. Images swirled through her mind, of ice and snow ... and time. Eons of time. And ... there was a quick thud-thud of her heart, the impressions, the creature’s intent, unmistakable. Home is here?
