Fitting out new rooms at Cancer Council WA lodges

Cancer Council WA Lodges provide accommodation for country cancer patients when they come to Perth for treatment. Demand for this accommodation reaches near full occupancy throughout the calendar year. Unfortunately some cancer patients are turned away each year due to capacity restrictions and have to find alternate lodgings.

Cancer Council WA recently moved to new offices in Subiaco. Office space at both Crawfod and Milroy Lodges has become vacant, offering up an opportunity to convert this available space into much needed additional accommodation facilitates for cancer patients.  

Funds from Dry July will go towards fitting out new rooms at the lodges, enabling more patients to utilise this service in the future.

Upgrades at Charles Wanstall Lodge in Brisbane

Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ) will use funds to upgrade units at Charles Wanstall Lodge interiors and fixtures to improve patients’ comfort away from home. Upgrades to the rooms will include carpet, new furniture, blinds, painting, kitchen and bathroom upgrades (where necessary), to transform each unit into an environment that softens the harsh reality of treatment and provide an atmosphere of comfort, support and hope needed to help patients beat cancer. The Charles Wanstall Lodge opened in Brisbane in March 1983 and is the first of CCQ’s lodges. In 2014 over 11,000 room nights were provided for cancer patients and their families.  

Each year 24,000 people across Queensland are diagnosed with cancer. Cancer treatment options for approximately 35% of patients diagnosed is only available in Brisbane. For regional and remote patients, undergoing radical cancer treatment in an unfamiliar city, isolated from support networks, is a daunting prospect. Beyond the psychological implications of being away from home during treatment, there is often a financial barrier. Patients completing an eight-week course in radiation would pay approximately $8,200 for commercial accommodation. The Charles Wanstall Lodge offers purpose-built accommodation to help ensure regional Queenslanders can access treatment affordably.
