Sorry to uh. Adapt the question I guess? But the microphone question for the fic asks is 'is [the story] written in your normal voice?' Or something similar, and I don't have a SPECIFIC story to ask about, but I did want to know if you have one that feels like an outlier in your writing/use of voice?

What an interesting question, thank you! I feel as though I always try -- with varying degrees of success -- to adapt my authorial voice to the canon I am writing for, but the real outlier, I would say, is my attempt at a Watsonian voice, perhaps most notably in "The Craven Hive."

Inspired by Watson is a Time Lord which I've been writing with @jeremys-come-to-bed-eyes and @fruitviking - as a time travel story it's been a fun chance to explore Holmes' childhood!

We have Silas, the patriarch of the family. Most of his life has been tied up in managing the family estate, but his pioneering monograph on the use of photography for astronomical study as brought him to the attention of certain learned circles. His regal wife Emilie was a successful operatic soprano before retiring to a blissful domestic life, and now she spends her days engaged in horticulture and raising her boys.

Mycroft is, of course, Mycroft. But smaller. And Sherlock is the baby of the family :D

AHHHHH I will do my best!

The Butterfly Dream - Fullmetal Alchemist This is effectively the first fanfic I wrote (....as an adult, do we count things I wrote as a 13 year old Doctor Who fan?) and I still reread it fairly often because of how much I enjoy it. An attempt to combine various concepts I really like in both '03 and Brotherhood. And it's set in Xing, because I want more Xing.

After The World West Awry - Sherlock Holmes

I know lots and LOTS of people have done stories where Sherlock Holmes ends up in the 21st century through various ways and means, but I had thoughts about how I'd do it (namely that he's not going to be ok with being there without Watson), so I did.

If anyone ever sits me down and asks if I have a Sherlock Holmes related screenplay, I'd shove this at them.

Golden Visions, Are Ye Flown?

When writing my game The Beekeeper's Picnic I kept dropping hints in the text that Holmes' vision is fairly limited, mostly as a way to get around him not spotting things the player hasn't closely examined.

I ended up writing this to explore that, and get out some of my "Holmes and Watson end up in Sussex together" feels since the game won't be finished for a long time. So if you're getting fed up waiting for that game this is like the next best thing?

I feel like this epitomises what I love about fanfiction? Is the concept absolutely bananas? Yes. Is it ridiculously self-indulgant? Again, yes. Are we treating it deathly seriously? Mostly. Are we enjoying ourselves writing it? ABSOLUTELY!

I just think that we've squeezed this concept dry and then someone will come up with another idea and we ping off all over again.

(Although not going to lie, the fact that in the year 2023 I am writing something which at least meets the "Who" and the "lock" part of... y'know, makes me want to stare at a wall and have an existential crisis)

⭐- What’s a scene/paragraph you’re proud of? for The Craven Hive

Thanks for the ask! I'm very fond of The Craven Hive, including the ways in which the last paragraph harks back to the first. Between those bookends, a scene I particularly like is that in which Watson, dressing, looks down at Holmes beginning his reconstruction of the scene of the crime:

Holmes, as I have remarked elsewhere, was not a habitually early riser. And so it was with a jolt of surprise that I looked out my bedroom window, the following morning, to behold his unmistakable figure in the quadrangle. He stood quite motionless, his shoulders hunched against the cold and his eyes fixed upon the ground, resembling nothing so much as some great brooding bird of prey.

I hastened to complete my toilette that I might join him. I did so with no little apprehension. In the former years of our association, he had sometimes been wont to call me a harbinger of crime. Beholding him, standing lone and portentous as a prophet in the winter dawn, I could not help but fear what I had called down on us all by inviting him to Seale Hayne. I knew that certainty would be preferable to doubt; but what new nightmare possibilities might be opened along our path I could not say, and in that moment I quailed from knowing them.
