Things to do Before Exams
I took a final this morning and the professor probably immediately started grading at the front of the room upon receiving the first one. Something I saw and overheard someone commenting on when leaving the building, specifically "did you see him? Just red everywhere". Which is flat out hilarious to me bc a big part of my job as a math exam proctoring is to grade as the exams are turned in and so I'm often actually the one scribbling red everywhere.
Anyways, hardest final over. Two more to go
#113: My GPA during first semester was trash because I was trying to support my parents through financial and domestic tensions, helping my younger sibling apply for colleges, and overcoming the shock at how inadequately I was prepared for college. I always imagine how different my academic career would be if I got a chance to live life and study without the emotion toll of family. But then again, my family is my biggest motivation to keep moving forward. I hope I make them proud.
New Study Tactics for College Level Academics
I prayed this day wouldn't come that I will have to employ a new study method for college. My study methods that landed me 2 great high school years of excellent grades and took years to discover.
Luckily, I am taking summer classes, living in a dorm, and doing the college thing before the start of my first year this fall. I have a sense of what I need to alter and eliminate from my past study methods.
Here are my obstacles...
each class is different (just like people, the aspects of a class varies)
scheduling academic and social life
The list will get longer at the start of the fall semester.
I am trying to experiment with study tactics before the fall in which I change my methods each week and self-evaluate based on grades and performance in class.
I will inform you guys on the results and the best way to achieve a A+ in college as a first year (freshman).
We’re a long way from achieving gender equality in the academy. So let’s start a conversation on discrimination, structural problems, and what needs to be done.
Once again, my professors either pity me or I am too hard on myself.
Academic Job Market
"Rebecca Schuman’s recent post on a job listed at Sewanee is well worth reading. Among other things, she notes that the two-body problem is only a problem for people who have partners who don’t stay home; whether intentionally or not, it rewards the single-earner family. She further notes that faculty from racial or cultural minorities can easily find themselves severely isolated at many rural jobs, so in effect, they face an even more constricted market than they otherwise would. (Schuman is especially good on this point.)"

"The entire point of my “Job Ad Grade” for Sewanee is that women and people of color will automatically be a poor “fit” for an institution with this profile, and so I MADE A FUCKING JOKE about the EOE language that calls this irony into question. Are there exceptions? Of course."
"But the problem of the university town—which was invented before women or people of color joined the professoriate—remains, no matter where it is. Did I take some cheap shots at an easy target (i.e. Tennessee, which is home to a bunch of the dickholes currently responsible for shutting down our government)? Yes. And for that I apologize–and have apologized."
