So I joined a website for finding international pen-pals. I did this in order to hopefully find somebody in Darwin, Australia, since Arrow’s family is going to be from there, and I want to get an idea what it’s really like to live there.
Well. I’m getting hit up by a lot of dudes who are clearly kind of lonely hearts who have trouble understanding that “I do not flirt, and if you try to flirt with me, I will shut you down” is indeed a thing I do. I put a warning to that effect in my profile and everything.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s a Japanese guy from New Zealand, and a Brazilian guy I’m now exchanging messages with who are totally rad dudes so far, but they’re two out of about twenty stranger dudes who have hit me up within the past few days on this site. Only one woman has contacted me, and I’m hoping she’ll reply to my response, because she’s from Saudi Arabia and I don’t know much about that country, so I’m so down for making a friend there.
But these DUDES. Is this a small sample of what OKCupid must be like?
It’s a good thing I find it really amusing coming up with creative ways to shut them down, or this would be pretty damned annoying.
I still get asked with appalling regularity 'where my ideas come from.' Here’s the deal. I flood my poor ageing head with information. Any information. Lots of it. And I let it all slosh around in the back of my brain, in the part normal people use for remembering bills, thinking about sex and making appointments to wash the dishes. Eventually, you get a critical mass of information. Datum 1 plugs into Datum 2 which connects to Datum 3 and Data 4 and 5 stick to it and you’ve got a chain reaction. A bunch of stuff knits together and lights up and you’ve got what’s called 'an idea'. And for that brief moment where it’s all flaring and welding together, you are Holy. You can’t be touched. Something impossible and brilliant has happened and suddenly you understand what it would be like if Einstein’s brain was placed into the body of a young tyrannosaur, stuffed full of amphetamines and suffused with Sex Radiation. That is what has happened to me tonight. I am beaming Sex Rays across the world and my brain is all lit up with Holy Fire. If I felt like it, I could shag a million nuns and destroy their faith in Christ. From my chair. See, this is the good bit about writing. It’s what keeps you going. It’s the wild rush of 'shit, did I think of that?' with all kinds of weird chemicals shunting around your brain and ideas and images and moments and storyforms all opening up snapsnapsnap in your mind, a mass of new and unrealised possibilities. It’s ten past two in the morning, and I’m completely wired, caught up in the new thing, shivering and laughing and glowing in the dark. Just as well it’s the middle of the night. No-one would be safe from me right now. I could read their minds and take over their heartbeats with a glare. Faster than the speed of anyone. That’s how it works.

Life Update: Novel Issues
Having an original novel idea again is weirding me out, dude. Like, I’ve been trying for years to come up with something I could fashion into a novel instead of fanfiction without getting painfully bored of. Been trying since I was 13 and found out one of my favorite YA authors published her first novel as a teenager.
Tried so hard that I made one and would have gotten it published if I could’ve rewritten it, but by then I couldn’t even go back and read it. Like just studying literature improved my storytelling and story-structure knowledge, in public school, so much in such a short period of time that once I knew what I needed to fix, the endeavor would have been so boring and unpleasant I knew even at age 15 I would never love it again if I forced myself to rewrite it, basically. It was a huge weight on my shoulders for years, because my mother would not just let me drop it, and kept trying to steer me back toward working on it.
But I couldn’t stop coming up with stories. I just needed ideas, you know? I never know what I want to say until I’m asked the right question or otherwise given the right cue, just in interacting with other humans. Pulling a novel out of thin air with no directions, or prompts, and coming up with something I could really get behind, and say things with it that I’m super-passionate about, like I could tell was something Douglas Adams did with the Hitchhiker’s Guide stories I loved so much? Not easy. In fact, that is the gordian knot of my WHOLE life.
Fanfiction? Easy. I got a universe built and ready to play in, I got characters I know so well I have literally memorized their whole vocal and expressive range (in part because I want to be able to steal from those bits later for other things) and Fandom has this lovely Prompt Culture built in. Set me off, watch me go.
But building a whole new universe and a whole canon, and making sure all the plot devices run smoothly, and fleshing out something that––while an imitation of several things before it––is still new and its own and all in MY voice or voices I came up with my own self, and/or memorized from my own personal experiences? Is a bit of a mindfuck from start to finish, and don’t let nobody tell you no different.
It’s an endeavor requiring enough processing that I can literally feel it growing faster than my conscious thoughts, which are very wordy, can fully keep up with, like. I think I have one idea of what its plot is supposed to be doing, and then three weeks later a loudspeaker spontaneously forms in the back of my skull long enough to explain: “NO THAT IS TOO CONVOLUTED YOU SHOULD USE JON STEWART INSTEAD” and changes 70% of the plot I thought I knew, excluding certain tragic deaths, and there’s a noise like something draining, and suddenly I am in my car driving home from a liquor store with tears in my eyes listening to people on NPR talk about Jon Stewart’s effects on history and pop culture whispering, “Yesssssss” into my windshield.
And knowing that if anybody were sitting in my passenger seat, at that time, they would be convinced that I am a crazy person.
And yet? That’s a VERY GOOD SIGN. To me. Because yes, I am a crazy person, but it’s what most people like about me so here I am.
