The Hi Power and Q/Strip pedals are gone, and an Aclam Dr. Robert pedal is now plugged into the effects loop on the Boss GX10.
The Dr. Robert is a painstaking recreation of the preamp section on the Vox UL730 amplifier, which the Beatles used on Revolver and Sergeant Pepper.
On the right is the normal channel, which can be cranked to a reasonable crunchiness, and it has a reactive mid control that can accentuate or tame its spikiness.
On the left is the “Mach Schau!” button, a gain boost that sends it into overdrive, named after what drunken German sailors would yell at the Beatles during their tenure in the Hamburg club scene.
And it’s got original artwork by Klaus Voorman, who famously designed the Revolver album cover, of the notorious “Dr. Robert,” who introduced the Beatles to LSD, slipping some pills into the tea…
This pedal is really different compared to other amp sims and preamps, one, because of the fact that the UL730 is such a rare amp these days that getting one to analyze is a small miracle, and two, because Aclam nailed it.

The UL730 was a product of Vox’s partnership with the American Thomas organ company, and used a solid-state preamp in front of a tube power section. It sounds like it, too.
Only about 100 were ever built, the electronics were wonky, and a lot of them were returned by endorsees and customers in favor of newer all-transistor models - and reportedly scrapped, so it’s very rare today.
Other than the Beatles, famous users included Jimmy Page with Led Zeppelin and Bernard Sumner during the Joy Division days. (Aclam made limited edition versions to celebrate those, too.)

Peppers.Introduced in 1966, these state-of-the-art guitar amps mixed a solid-state preamp with a tube power amp section.Thanks to the relatively new transistor technology, lots of features could be added.Top of the line models included two channels with three band eq each, distortion, tremolo and reverb.Only a small number of UL730 units survived: attaining the title of being the most collectable Vox amps, with prohibitive collector pricing.Now they are the missing link between tube and solid-state amps!The most accurate replica of the classic Vox UL730 preamp.To accurately replica the amp's soul and character, Aclam Guitars traced the circuit board and measured each component's value in their original UL730.One of the keys of the UL730's tone is its “Middle” control which is one of the most interesting mid-range EQ ever found in an amp.By turning it counterclockwise, a great amount of mid-frequencies will be subtracted: creating a scooped sound.On the other hand, when it's turned clockwise, it will bring out all the mids and the signal will build up in gain.By tailoring the “Middle” knob you can control both midrange and saturation.To achieve more distortion, Aclam Guitars added a custom FET saturation engine which mimics the attributes of the tube power amp section.Aclam Guitars went even further: adding a "Mach Shau!" section.This section adds saturation to your main sound and includes an independent volume control: allowing you to have a rhythmic and a solo tone.Aclam Dr Robert Pedal Features:Replica of the VOX UL730 S/N: 3042We’ve found some internet and old schematics but major discrepancies between the published schematic and the real thing were detected.
