The Hierophant
The Hierophant — Who is a fellow game designer you’ve learned a lot from? OR What is a piece of popular wisdom about games you think is nonsense?
i genuinely hate most popular wisdom about game design, but the biggest one i'll get on a soapbox about and discuss is when people say "ttrpgs are for collaborative storytelling" which to me is very limiting and not actually helpful for understanding how or why people engage with ttrpgs
because if a ttrpg's only point is to tell a story collaboratively, then most ttrpgs (even very good ttrpgs) are very bad story-generation mechanisms, and also i just simply dont play ttrpgs to tell a story with friends, that's just one possible motivation someone might have for entering into a game.
wanderhome in particular talks about this by claiming its explicitly NOT about telling a story, and to set aside storytelling desires for afterwards
