I’m the first #AfricanAmerican (#biracial) woman to star as a leading character and acrobatic role in a #CirqueDuSoleil production. I am also a #SURVIVOR. As a #Black woman who has forged a very successful career in the circus arts; I would like to detail the difficult journey to becoming a success in this field, and how the gymnastics world mirrors that of the circus world with dynamics and politics within the environments being very similar. I have suffered racism, sexism, and sexual violence in both the circus and gymnastics worlds. @SimoneBiles may be arguably the most decorated gymnast, woman or man, in World Championship history, & she could easily rack up the greatest number of combined Olympic & world medals in artistic gymnastics, even if she can't stick a landing - she has a total of 30 right now & needs four more in this summer's Tokyo Games to surpass Vitaly Scherbo from Belarus. However, @LarisaLatynina, who formerly represented the Soviet Union at three Olympics between 1956 & 1964, remains the most decorated Olympian in women's gymnastics with 18 medals, nine of which are gold, being the only gymnast to win All Around & all the individual events, AND while pregnant. Latynina, who has a background in ballet, received team gold medals at the 1956 Melbourne, 1960 Rome, & 1964 Tokyo Games. Other highlights include two Olympic all-around titles & three consecutive Olympic gold medals on floor. She's currently 86, & when she competed in Tokyo at her last Olympics, she was 30 & pretty; though the difficulty level of the four-event sport drastically increased with time, competing at that age even back then is an impressive feat given the physical demand of artistic gymnastics. Competing while pregnant is impressive at any time at any age. While #Biles might perform faster aerodynamic tricks that probably belong in #acrobaticGymnastics, not #artisticGymnastics, she doesn't get a pass for the stutter hops when she lands.
