The Concept of Invisible Acting
Written by Renato Rizzuti
When you are watching a play or a film, you want to see âinvisible acting.â What this means is that you do not want to see the actors âacting.â The acting should seem to be very natural and happening in real time for the first time!Â
What causes âpainfully visibleâ acting? Acting that makes it âpainfulâ to watch and gives you a feeling of discomfort? For one thing, a case where an actor that is under rehearsed and struggles to remember the scripted lines. The lines should be well rehearsed and committed to memory so that they come out sounding natural and seem to be spoken for the first time.Â
Another major factor to consider is the physical state of the actor. Nervous ticks and other involuntary physical movements caused by uncontrollable nervousness are also undesirable. An actor has to learn ârelaxed concentration.â This means that the actor is relaxed enough to let the âacting energyâ flow out unhampered by anything that may interrupt the flow.Â
Generally speaking, the acting should be natural looking and natural sounding. There should be nothing âartificialâ about the acting. There is nothing better than watching actors at the top of their game! The trick is to act as though you are not âacting!â Never get caught âactingâ in a production! Make your acting pure and natural and a pleasure to watch!
