The Superboy Uniform and Equipment set for Ideal's Action Boy (son of Captain Action) action figure, circa 1967.
Action Boy -- NOW!
The Superboy Uniform and Equipment kit for Action Boy, Captain Action's sidekick (and in the original DC Comic, his son). Circa 1967.
The Robin Uniform and Equipment Set for Action Boy, circa 1967.
The Captain Action action figure was so popular upon his debut in 1966 that the following year he got a sidekick (or son, according to the DC Comic), Action Boy, and a villain, Dr. Evil (no, not THAT guy).
As the Batman live-action show was all the rage at the time, it made absolute sense that Robin would be one of three outfits for Action Boy; the other two were Superboy and Aqualad.
And just like in the TV show, this Robin wears tights!
The only three superhero costumes for Action Boy, "Captain Action's powerful companion!"
(In the DC comic book Action Boy was Captain Action's son.)
In 1966-67, these three teen heroes were extremely popular. Superboy and Aqualad were starring in animated shorts on CBS Saturday mornings, and Robin was in the live action Batman show.
So these costume sets for Action Lad were a sweet deal back in the mid-1960s, since there were no action figures based on superheroes. Sure, the masks were a little off-putting, and they generally didn't fit the base figure's head very well; I wish they had just included an alternate head to put on the base figure (but that was probably a little too expensive). But in the 60s these were awesome!
I dig most of the accessories (KRYPTO THE SUPER_DOG!!!!!!!!!!), but Aqualad's puzzle me. A shell axe? A swordfish spear? A freakin' sea horse knife???????????
Octo the octopus, however, is pretty sweet.
Action figures of Captain Action, Action Boy, their pet panther, Khem, and their diabolical nemesis Dr. Evil (no, not THAT guy) in his disguise as friendly Dr. Thorpe.
The Captain Action and Dr. Evil/Thorpe figures appear to be originals (but I am no expert on this), while Action Boy looks like an original figure wearing a re-issue of his costume from Praying Mantis. Apparently, when the Captain Action line was revived Action Boy became Kid Action, hence the "KA" emblem on his chest.
That Captain Action is really “Father of the Year” material: he’s on the Moon decked out in a full space suit, yet his poor son, Action Boy, only has a puny helmet.
