Fro-yo girl here. This is the original Active Culture location, which opened as a froyo shop back in 2010. Over the years, they added a wholesome menu of acai bowls, smoothies, shakes, bowls, burgers, burritos, salads, breakfast, and beverages. There are vegan, raw, gluten-free, and soy-free options. The froyo and toppings are $0.89/oz. There's a flat rate 32 oz cup for $10.99 option.

Pumpkin froyo: smooth, creamy, could taste pumpkin and spices, mild

Vegan vanilla coconut: really liked this flavor, it was dense, smooth, and creamy with a clean flavor

Salted caramel froyo

Pom raspberry sorbet

The flavors had info like vegan, soy-free, gluten-free3, contains dairy, contains soy, etc. Toppings were labeled and covered. I spotted fresh fruit, popping boba, syrups, mochi, granola, candy, cereal, coconut, nuts, etc.

The shop is cute. It looks like a little house and there’s an art installation in one room. During Happy Hour on Fridays from 3 PM – 5 PM, froyo is 50% off. It's close enough to walk to the beach in a few minutes. Or hang out and use the free wi-fi.

Fro-yo girl here. I had a hard time finding Active Culture even though I was looking for it. If you stroll down the main path of the mall, you won’t see it. You have to walk towards the marina (where the boats are) from Whole Foods. I knew about Active Culture many years ago when they opened in Laguna Beach, but this was my first time visiting one of their locations.

They’re a natural healthy foods café that also happens to serve froyo. They serve acai bowls, smoothies, shakes, bowls, burgers, burritos, salads, breakfast, adult beverages, and froyo. There are vegan, raw, gluten-free, and soy-free options. There were no prices posted for the entrees and no receipt was provided.

Frozen yogurt is counter serve: Jumbo ($6.99), Regular ($5.99), Cone ($3.99), Mini ($3.49).

Froyo flavors: Organic vanilla, Organic chocolate, Pom-raspberry sorbet, Salted caramel

Not your mama’s nachos ($14.99): Tortilla chips, organic black beans, melted cheddar, tomato, onion, salsa, sour cream, guac, cilantro, OG sauce. This was huge! But so good – different too. The OG sauce is a yellow curry sauce that’s flavorful and so good on nachos. The corn tortilla chips were thin and crispy. They were generous with toppings and the toppings were so fresh and flavorful. Never had curry sauce on nachos. Pretty brilliant.

Organic vanilla froyo: The mini size wasn’t tiny. It was enough froyo to satisfy my froyo craving. The froyo was rich, creamy, smooth and had a nice vanilla flavor.

Order at the counter and get a number. They’ll bring your food to you. The café is new and looks beautiful – white walls, succulents, marina views, lots of outdoor seating.

Service was attentive. They checked in with me several times. I wasn’t expecting the food to be so good!

Biochemistry in Action: Foaming Yogurt

I just added a half-scoop of protein powder to my plain yogurt. I stirred it in, then made my peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Sat down to eat, and when I went to take a bite of the yogurt, there were all these little bubbles in it. I know yogurt has live, active cultures in it, but I didn’t expect it to be quite so visibly active. The protein powder does have 6g of sugar per serving (so I added ~3g to the yogurt), but it’s not like it’s that much extra compared to what the yogurt already had... I’ve actually made my own yogurt before, and I don’t remember it being as bubbly as this is. So weird. Tastes fine.

Every trip taken to Laguna Beach, I have to stop by Active Culture and get a chocolate coconut bliss shake! Last time we went, we tried a 'whole bowl' without the cheese and loved it. Today we went again and I got my own 😁 Cabbage, beans, rice, avocado, salsa, OG sauce (no idea what that is but it's delicious). Got a good photo of it with my new LG G3 which I love
