more rps activity limits should accommodate people with mental illnesses and that’s the tea
im in an rp where we basically don't have activity checks and we just have a vibe check on the discord and it works really well imo? especially during times like this w/ the holidays and break
that sounds really cool, sadly i have no idea what a vibe check is if i’m honest. but i’m happy that works really well for the rp!
What is an ideal activity limit to you then?
since i’ve had this discussion in the past with people, i decided to make a tag for it of messages i’ve answered dealing with this.
RIGHT HERE for anyone who wanted it.
but in summary, every disabled person would need different accommodates and personally, having a looser hiatus limit more than an activity limit is beneficial. also checking in on members is a great idea when they’re on hiatus to make sure not only are they’re okay but if they’re planning on staying for the long haul since it can get hard on them and can give certain members anxiety to talk to the admin about certain things.
So I'm an admin of an RPG and I've been reading your stuff on activity checks and disabilities—having mental health issues myself, I totally agree with your points and the points of others. I know MY RPG has Checks bc too often we've been ghosted and had to reopen the roles w/o hearing from the RPers, and I as an Admin have reached out to my members who have been struggling and worked with them when their disability doesn't allow them to RP. Do you have any recommendations for balancing both??
that’s completely understandable on why having activity checks can be helpful for some roleplays especially when you have members who ghost (which i am 100% guilty of doing before). but in my opinion, i think how you’re handling your roleplay from this message doesn’t really need any more balancing since it seems like you have it all covered but again, that’s just my personal opinion and someone else’s might differ from mine.
so keep up the good work and if anyone has any recommendations to help better the balance (that can be more helpful than me which is v likely), please send it in or reply to this because multiple opinions can be more helpful than my one.
like activity limits can suck if you're disabled but they can at least be made up for with a hiatus. but then there are groups that are super strict about giving them! like i've seen one where the rule is 'if you take a two week hiatus (their max) you can't take another one, even a short one, for a month' like jfc !! also activity checks like? can go die in a fire? like i know but i'm using the time you gave me and if you don't like it change your rules.
askdjaslkdas this is my absolute favourite message of the day.
honestly, i’ll probably would not join a group with a strict hiatus rule (because what’s the point ? i get you want people to be active but life is unpredictable and i cannot control when i’m gonna go down a depressive rabbit hole and how long i’ma be down there, soz)
but yeah, activity checks are v weird sometimes to me, because some people (i have seen this with my own two eyes) literally only post when they’re on the activity check and don’t post again until the next activity check (which i have mad respect for lowkey cause i know i would never be able to get away with that shit lmao)
but yeah, the entire system of dealing with activity in roleplays is just … weird in general ? i mean, each to their own, of course but like i have been saying all day: people need to be considerate of people who are disabled because we cannot work with activity limits like everyone who isn’t and i’m surprised this is just now being brought up to this extent tbh
but overall, you make solid points and i respect this entire message
agreed with your post. i'm disabled irl, can't always tell when i'll have a good day, esp with depression. unfortunately, not all admins are understanding. in the past, i had sly comments about being a disabled adult & needed time to reply IC. (more backhanded tbh, so they can pretend to be nice but actually weren't.) like, just bc i rp to get away from the stresses of real life??? i'm not going to apologize for that. idk. the community still has a lot of problems which is sad
first, i want to apologise for them doing that to you since no one deserves something like that especially for being disabled/mentally ill, it’s not right and completely uncalled for. i hope you find or are in a roleplay that has understanding admins if you still roleplay in groups.
second, i wholeheartedly agree with you, the community do have a lot of problems that definitely needs to be fixed and be more understanding and inclusive for people who can’t handle strict activity limits because of things out of their control. i really hope this conversation open up a lot of eyes when it comes to where the community is going and how to make it more inclusive to people who deals with illnesses they cannot control while also having a safe environment to do what they love without judgement for not being able to be active every single day.
hey so i'm working on starting a twitter rp ( which ik are notorious for strict activity limits ) - do you think that being able to just dm the main saying that you need to skip the check would help people with mental / chronic illnesses? if not what would you suggest?
i’m in a twitter rp so i feel this so hard (but the admins are really great even with their activity limit actually being that you’re supposed to interact with ppl every day asldjalsjd)
and honestly, i feel that this would be helpful but it could also be somewhat of a double edged sword for some people with anxiety disorders (this is from personal experience and it might be like this for other people who doesn’t have an anxiety disorder/everyone with an anxiety disorder so pls don’t come at me about this, okay? thank u) who doesn’t like bothering the main with their issues but that would definitely be a starting point in my book.
but definitely be considerate of your members is definitely something to do and making sure they feel like they can come to you is important so maybe check up on people who seems to slack a lot when they’re normally very active can be very helpful and going to them because from personal experience i have been dropped from (twitter & tumblr) roleplays because i was too afraid to go to the admins about needing time away because of how bad my anxiety was. but remember that this is a person to person thing so different people will have different opinions and i’m just one person.
but if anyone else has any other suggestions please feel free to reply to this/reblog this with your suggestion since this is just my opinion and people opinions varies depending on what they deal with when it comes to mental/chronic illnesses.
