MEMBER SPOTLIGHT AND ACT OF HEROISM ⚡️🙌🏼⚡️👏🏼 A few weeks ago our member Gary Hallett Jr, Journeyman Lineman working for PAR Electric was honored for his act of heroism while working out with his crew. He and his crew were working in the city of La Habra when they noticed a house down the street was on fire. Gary ran over to the house banged on the door and could hear someone was inside. He then entered the house that was engulfed in flames and smoke and was able to rescue two ladies that lived in the home. He was able to get them out safely before the fire department or emergency services had arrived. He put his life in danger to save another. I was thinking exactly the same. I find it hard to believe that a team as proud as Ferrari can simply forget the comments he’s made.

I seriously cannot believe they did that... He's a great driver but the team is more than that... I'm very disappointed =/

No but seriously, can I just... (Loki Meta/Rant 2.0)

So this pain-inducing gifset made by actofheroism came up on my dash, and apparently my Loki-feels run my entire life now. So I did a thing. Again. Oops. (You can read meta part one over here)

This parallel hurts me. It kind of proves the point I made in my last rant. The irony of Loki’s current situation (i.e. being imprisoned by his former family) isn't lost on Loki a bit. He knows what he's done to himself - he watched himself do it. Like I said before, Loki is his own worst enemy. He screws himself over constantly; gets himself in too deep and over his head, and he refuses to admit it or ask for help. Instead, he owns his mistakes - plays them off as 'all part of the plan', when really he is just trying to tread water in the ocean of trouble he's caused himself. He's always been self-conscious - he grew up in Thor's overwhelming shadow, after all - but I think this need to never admit failure is the biggest indication of how lost and desperate Loki is.

"How desperate are you, that you call on such lost creatures to defend you?"

In The Avengers, Loki mocks the team (Bruce specifically) by calling them 'lost creatures'. But the speech he gives about the Hulk - calling him a 'mindless beast [who] makes play he's still a man' - is painfully indicative of how Loki sees himself. We know Loki thinks himself a monster. He's been raised to believe the Frost Giants were monstrous and cruel and hateful. And he has completely rejected his Asgardian family, as we see in his confrontation with Thor. So what else is Loki meant to be? He plays at being ‘Loki of Asgard’ and ‘the rightful King of Asgard’, but does he really believe that? Or is he just playing a part? Loki's character development in this move is largely about how unstable he's become, how he's lost everything and become lost himself. We see how ready he is to accept what he sees as his fate: to become 'the monster parents tell their children about at night.' Because if he cannot be King of Asgard or a Son of Odin, he has no choice but to embrace the last option left to him. And he does embrace it - with relish. Because Loki can't do anything halfway, and he refuses to admit when he's out of his depth. So he embraces the role of the villain - the monster.

Because Loki is, more than anything else, truly desperate. He has no home to return to, no real family, no person he can trust. He knows he has already painted a target on his head by committing atrocities on Asgard - things he did in a mad, misguided attempt to prove himself worthy. He is like a caged and cornered animal in the Avengers, chased down lashing out at anyone that gets in his way. He is lost and scared and hurt and absolutely vicious with it.

"You think yourself above them?" "Well yes." He calls Bruce and the Avengers the 'lost creatures', but I don't believe for a second that he counts himself any different. He knows what he is. This is part of what fuels him; why he wants to beat them to well and so publicly. He wants to set himself apart - to prove himself above these petty, misfit mortals. But he fails. He is knocked down and dragged out over the coals of his words and actions by these 'lost creatures' - who are not nearly so lost as Loki himself. Like Phil Coulson says, Loki loses because he 'lacks conviction'. All of Loki's actions come from a place of desperation and self-loathing. His bid to conquer the earth is halfhearted at best - as if he tacked it on as a constellation prize, when really he just need to stir-up chaos. The Avengers have the conviction Loki lacks; they have something to fight for, something to protect. Loki's plan has no grounding and so it falls apart under him. The small amount of purpose he'd gained for himself is lost just as quickly as it was given, and Loki is once again left with nothing to fight for. Once it becomes clear that he is on his own, fighting a team instead of a bunch of lost souls, Loki gives up and comes quietly.

"You must be truly desperate to come to me for help."

That's why this parallel gets me so badly. Because this whole thing isn't lost on Loki, who's probably had ample time to sit and stew over everything in prison. He must know the awful irony of his word choice here - the situations are so PAINFULLY similar. Just like before, Loki finds himself in a glass cage, contained like a feral animal they haven't put down. Just like before, he is questioned by his captor, given threatening ultimatums and absolutely no trust (for good reason). And, just like before, Loki responds with amusement and self-deprecation. The first time his jab at himself was veiled behind his contempt for his enemies - he was trying to set himself apart. But not anymore. Now, broken and defeated and locked away, Loki can't muster much other than amusement. He's amused that mighty Thor - the worthy son - have to come to Loki for aid. It gives him a vicious kind of satisfaction, I think, to be the 'lost creature' that Thor must count on. Because Thor really must be desperate to resort to Loki; everyone knows he is a lie-smith and a dangerous criminal. Thor coming to him is a modicum of control - of power -  Loki believed he no longer had. And Loki is nothing if not an opportunist. Loki will use this inch he is given and take a miles and miles. 

And jesus, if that's not terrifying and exciting all at once.

1. What is your favourite book? You cannot ask me what my favourite book is, I've got loads! But I can tell you that I love 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' by JRR Tolkien (of course), the 'Harry Potter' series by JK Rowling (again, of course), and certainly 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen. I'd say those are my absolute favourites.

2. Do you like Nutella? HELL YES. It's the best thing to ever exist. Ever.

3. What’s your favourite way to relax? My favourite way to relax would probably be to either read a book or watch a movie. Or to procrastinate on tumblr.

4. What’s your favourite season? (And no, I’m not referring to a TV series.) Summer. I love the sun and the sea, as well as ice-cream, barbecues, freedom from school, and the overall craziness and fun :)

5. Can you cook? Uhm, yes. I know how to cook, but I'm no chef!

6. Do you exercise? Sadly, not much. I wish I exercised more.

7. What do you dislike the most about yourself? Ahahaha, nice question! I don't really like how I look, so let's start from there. But I do dislike my social awkwardness and shyness sometimes.

8. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go first? Argh! Tough question! I'd say, England, because it's always been number one on my bucket-list! But I'd love to visit Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Australia, Malaysia, and everywhere else.  

9. Who’s your favourite artist (as in painter, not singer)? My favourite painter is Vincent van Gogh. I love his use of bold vivid colours and technique.

10. What would you do if you had to live in a place where there was no WiFi? Oh wow. I'd move out? Haha! 

11. Do you prefer sleeping or eating? Not fair! I love both, really. But I'd say I love sleeping more. I prefer to sleep an extra hour and skip breakfast.
