It's Going to Get Better
Hey. I don’t usually post stuff like this at all, but this is something so near and dear to my heart. I have emetophobia, or a fear of vomiting. It took over my life; from a young age I set up a strict list of foods I considered safe and wouldn’t eat anything else. I avoided roller coasters and public restrooms and nurses office because I didn’t ever want to face my fears. When I was 15, I developed an eating disorder after a bad night with a stomachache. That was all it took for me to completely stop eating. If faced with even my favorite foods, I would have a panic attack. My parents were mortified. They tried everything. They tried molly coddling me, and when that didn’t work, they yelled at me. That didn’t even work and I was rushed to the hospital on New Year’s Eve. When most kids my age were out having fun with friends, my dad and I were trying in vain to explain my problems to a doctor, who put me on antiemetics, in hopes that it would curb my anxiety. I went to sleep at 9:00 that night and I didn’t want to wake up. I was losing weight, losing energy, and losing all my will to keep on living. But the most bizarre thing happened eventually. I woke up one morning and I wanted to eat. Not just broth or apple juice, which was the only thing I could eat. I wanted waffles. So I made one. And it was so good that I made another. Up till then, I thought I would never get better. But here’s the thing. I did. I passed the milestone of 11 years without vomiting without incident recently, whereas usually I lived the whole day in dread of a repeat. I still struggle with eating new foods, but I will try them (if they’re not too suspicious). I’m in the top 5 of my class and I do theatre. I have a boyfriend who loves me and will comfort me when my stomach hurts. :) I don’t have full blown panic attacks from seeing vomiting on television anymore. Most importantly, I’m happy. I never thought I’d be happy again, but I am. And to anyone who is going through what I have who might be reading this… You will be happy again, I promise. You can beat this. I believe in you.
