My little babyyyy my babyyyyy
Wanted to share a lil Arno animatic I made for @thou-babbling-brook 's birthday! 💙
Timothée Chalamet on the set of A Complete Unknown (June 2024).
Okay, I'm curious. What's in your opinion TC's strongest and weakest performance (if you believe that he even has a weak performance)? Counting big and small roles. I want an expert opinion
FINALLY MY TIME HAS COME AND I’M BEING ASKED THE QUESTION THAT I DISCUSS DAILY WITH MYSELF AND ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN (my gf) GET READY FOR A MASSIVE GLAZE SESSION. I’m actually so honored to be considered an expert in timothée performances, you have no idea. I made my girl @feydpauls sit down and help me with this so I could better structure my thoughts out, really crack my knuckles and get to work, because this is serious business. an anon needs my expert opinion and I gotta pour my heart and soul into this, TedTalk style.
It’s hard for me to think of the solitary strongest performance he’s ever given because my thoughts on this change every day, frequently by the hour. I go back and forth between what I consider to be his best performances and what I consider to be my personal favorite movies he’s done, and they don’t always intersect. for context, I’ve seen most of his movies except for the bit part he did in like Men, Women, and Children (fun fact, I had to look this movie up to remind myself what it was called and in doing so, saw there was fresh news of charlize theron criticizing timmy for his opera comments by saying ‘AI will replace his job in ten years but not opera’ lmao you really gotta love when someone serves a self-own. there will always be opera, there will always be theater, there will always be ballet and there will always be movies. no need to belittle and undermine your entire industry to promote an elitist agenda, Charlize.) I haven’t seen the Adderall Diaries or Miss Stevens though I feel like I should watch Miss Stevens at some point.
I've decided that I’ll give my thoughts on what I consider are his five strongest performances, as well as some honorable mentions. and you know what, I’ll just say it right here: He was right about Wonka, really, when he said it was a punk rock role for him to take. It should be talked about more!
raela's five favorite timothee performances in order of release date:
1. Elio Perlman in Call Me By Your Name. What hasn’t been said about this movie already? Iconic, revolutionary, groundbreaking, peach, astonishing, exhilarating, raw, riveting, and real. I think this kid is going places. 10/10 no notes. His first oscar nomination, enough said. But do we think that 20 year old timothée could have undertaken at the time roles as astronomically huge and nuanced as Bob Dylan or Marty Mauser? My gf made this point: The authenticity of this performance transcends the screen, but he needed time and experience to be able to act in the movies he’s undertaken in recent years. CMBYN undoubtedly catapulted his career but he benefited from being given long stretches of time for his turns as Paul Atreides in Dune Part Two, Bob Dylan in a Complete Unknown, and Marty Mauser in Marty Supreme. He has incredible innate talent that has since then been honed to the pursuit of perfection.
2. Hal in The King. We wouldn’t have Paul Atreides if we didn’t first have Hal in The King. Hal is our first look at how timmy would go about playing an isolated, lonely, neglected boy being forced into a seat and situation he does not want to be in, fearful of being controlled by those closest to him, and of hurting those he loves the most. He does some incredible eye acting in this movie, and his freckles in certain scenes should get their own credit at the end of the film. the same can be said for the bowlcut he sports. The same canNOT be said for that fuckass wig they make him wear. CMBYN is Elio’s movie, but he’s forced to share the screen in many ways with an ensemble cast of other interesting characters to varying degrees. this is similar in The King, and yet it is here that he solidifies himself as the true leading man in the titular role, carrying the entire movie on his shoulders and showing Denis Villeneuve that only he can play the world’s most favorite scifi boywitch turned emperor.
3. Paul Atreides in Dune Part 1 and Dune Part 2. so I said that I couldn’t select an absolute favorite performance from timmy’s catalogue but that was basically a lie. this. these two movies, soon to be a trilogy, are and will continue to be my favorite performances he’s ever done. there is only one Paul Atreides in a Denis Villeneuve cinematic landscape (sorry to Kyle MacLachlan, I do love Lynchian Dune too) The stoicism and restraint he cultivated in his previous films really lend themselves to his subtle yet rich performance in Part One, culminating in Part Two with an explosive powerhouse speech that could bring an empire (and emperor) to its knees. before Part Two released, there was a lot of talk about if timmy had been miscast in the role, and if he was capable of emerging from a small, neglected boy into a man who could lead a rebellion against an empire, but I was always a believer, because I, like Denis, simply had to go back and watch him staring into that fireplace at the end of CMBYN, or slipping through an army of Englishmen in The King, roaring a speech he screams from someplace deep in his chest, and I knew he was capable of the range necessary for Paul Atreides. there could be no other one capable.
4. Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. a transcendental performance, and quite quizzically underrated. his second oscar nomination. there are those who insist they can’t look past his fame and therefore they see only timothee cosplaying as bob, and some also insist that he doesn’t do a very good cosplay as bob, either. that is unfathomable to me. timmy loses himself completely in this role, giving a master-class performance as a man so recognizable in look, voice, and song that there were always going to be naysayers against anyone attempting to take Bob Dylan on. A biopic is always tricky, especially about a man that's been a staple revolutionary in the music industry for 60 years, but to me timmy is unrecognizable and fully becomes Bob Dylan in a way that must be seen without bias to be believed. I think of the first scene in the hospital where he plays his guitar for woody and the camera holds on his eyes, all the subtle choices he makes, the blinks, the flickering of his gaze and the plucking of his fingers until all you can see are his eyes and all you can hear are the words he’s singing, tugging on your heartstrings. scenes like this, that focus and attention to the eyes and all they convey to the audience, continue throughout the film, and the wide-eyed innocence of a boy just at the beginning of a passionate journey of exploration is soon lost to a deeply jaded need for self-discovery. this is the performance he deserved an oscar for.
5. Marty Mauser in Marty Supreme. I’ve tried a few times to express my thoughts on this performance and character to my girlfriend and friends, trying to find for myself the fine line that both timmy and Josh Safdie walked to create a character most similar to timmy (as he himself is quoted with saying) and yet still elevate it to unprecedented levels, nearly breaking the fourth wall and begging people to believe that they are actually watching timmy and not Marty running around after ping pong balls, aging actresses and dogs that have as many lives as a cat. You are urged to watch as he tries and fails, and fails, and fails, and ultimately wins in his quest for greatness and what that greatness inevitably means to him as a self-centered fuck up in his twenties emerging into adulthood. This is an indescribable performance and one that Safdie knew only timmy had the hustle and energy to complete, both on set and on the press run, where he worked hard to completely revolutionize what marketing around an indie film could be with a little elbow grease and a producing credit. I don’t consider this to be a top tier performance as much as I consider it to be a turning point in cinema. what he was incapable of doing at 20, when he rose to stardom playing an already astounding role as Elio, he is now capable of feats that are downright incomprehensible. also, we see his ass, which is so cute it deserves some type of ‘cutest ass’ award. he was snubbed as Bob Dylan, and so I thought it was going to be an easy oscar win for Marty Supreme, but Hollywood wanted to spank him again because they liked watching Martin Rockwell do it with a paddle so much in the movie. I guess he’ll just have to win it for Dune Part Three.
Honorable mentions:
Lee in Bones and All. I love, love, love, love timmy’s performance as Lee, but I mostly love this movie and everything it makes me feel that I cannot express, the road trip vibes, the cinematography, the soundtrack, the dreamy laziness, the metaphors, and the message that to love someone completely is to consume who they are completely and hold them inside you forever. This could be a top ten movie in general for me.
Gatsby in A Rainy Day in NY. I mention this movie because he’s so goddamn beautiful as this character, and some (me) could argue that this is his most androgynous look. If you look past the woody allen of it all, the movie is actually super funny too and quirky in an endearing way, and he gets to really put his wacky theater kid acting chops to the limit, all while just pouting the whole time with those red lips of his, distracting from anything that’s actually happening on screen. It’s worth it to watch, but you’ll have to stomach some pretty bad couple’s chemistry with Selena Gomez (I don’t blame either of them, I blame woody)
speaking of bad couple's chemistry!
unfortunately we've now arrived at what I will reveal as my least favorite timothée performance of all time:
Laurie in Little Women. please do not come for me for this. I know. I know. I'm so sorry. but here is what I'm going to say. this movie is about and for the girlies, and though he looks as pretty as a girl in the movie and does his best to keep up with Florence Pugh and Saoirse Ronan, it’s clear to me that Greta Gerwig cast him as the white boy of the month who could also double as a malnourished European boy from the 1800s and then didn’t give him much to chew his teeth on, similar to how she directed him in Ladybird in my humble opinion (coincidentally, I don’t like Ladybird as a movie, but I do love Little Women) I could have gone for an easier choice and picked something like his role in One&Two or Hot Summer Nights or even like, Don’t Look Up, where he gives kind of a one dimensional performance that still feels appropriate for the film, but I will double down and still go with Laurie as my personal choice for his ‘worst’ performance, because though he’s still good in the film, he’s not giving an elevated performance that he will later go on to give in future films, and he is overshadowed by nearly every other woman in the movie (Greta and Barbie would approve)
I had so much fun with this ask! I'm gonna tag some people now to see if they want to share their fave timmy performances. there is no pressure to answer, but I wanna spread the love and this is just for fun!
