The Proposal Series - Part 2: Kitty Mallick | @kittym

On the day of Sunday, June 19th, a 2021 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray in bright orange is delivered outside of Kitty’s home. The new vehicle is purposely selected as a ‘summer alternative’ to Kitty’s black Stingray. As both a show of appreciation for the engagement party and celebration of her new moniker as Maid of Honour, Rafael gifts the car and its contents to her. Inside, there is an obscene amount of Kit Kat (fortunately, Rafael’s assistant had the wisdom to keep the A/C on and avoid a melted chocolate mess). An on-the-nose and affectionate reference to her nickname. Despite the lavish gift, it’s the small trinkets inside that celebrate Kitty’s bigger success - Cat and Mouse. A racing themed set of Minnie Mouse ears and two, Etsy-crafted cat air fresheners act as a cheeky reference to the project’s name. Inside, a loving note handwritten by Rafael that sings the monetary and strategic benefit of her new project (a lot of ‘it was totally badass!’ and ‘we should do that with the deathies!’ is inscribed in the letter as well). The grandiose gift has one final, finishing touch - a custom license plate with KITKAT shining in summer light.

Rafael shows up thirty minutes later, and joins Kitty for a joy ride.

The Proposal Series - Part 4: Jessica Reyes @realjessicareyes (with @ikkinakamura) 

When Rafael first learned that Ikki asked Jessica to be his Maid of Honour (alongside his sister, Aya). He knew a spectacle needed to be had. After all, knowing his fiance, it was undoubtedly a subtle and low-key request. Up to the task, Rafael takes Jessica’s grand gesture into his own hands. After remembering her iconic moment as accidental back-up dancer on one of Taylor Swift’s 1989 concerts. Rafael calls up the pop star, and pays her an obscene amount of money to do a private performance in Jessica’s home. With a bribe to her security detail, Rafael is able to adorn Jessica’s apartment ceiling with large balloons of various hues.

Not forgetting that she is Ikki’s Maid of Honour, Rafael forces Ikki to join in on the gesture. Ikki is set behind the popstar, and is bestowed one of Rafael’s guitars where he is quickly instructed on how to play a simple chord for musical accompaniment. When Jessica appears, it’s not long before Rafael gifts her with a cheeky piece of jewelry.

One of his old, one-night-stand necklaces that is repurposed. The Tiffany heart is still obvious to anyone who knows the brand, but the branding is replaced with ‘Ikki’s Maid of Honour’ inscribed on the silver plate.

The Proposal Series - The End - Ikki Nakamura @ikkinakamura

Every couple deserves a proposal story. Now, by all estimations, Ikki’s proposal story is peak grand romance. A post-coma, bedside proposal? The romantics could do no better. But it occurs to Rafael, on a rainy summer day, that he does not have his own proposal story to tell. And that simply wouldn’t do.

Unlike his other grand gestures (larger than life, ridiculous, and yet rooted in the Femenias’ familiar, loud love), everything with Ikki has always been a whispered truth amidst the noise. Naturally, then, his proposal would reflect that.

The visit to Balliol College at the University of Oxford was, in fact, built into their calendars several months ago. A day spent speaking to prospective business graduates, mingling with fellow alumnus’, and ‘giving back’ to their alma mater. Choosing to take part, the couple spend the Friday afternoon roaming their old haunts. The lecture hall where they first met. The library where Rafael would constantly bother a studying Ikki, and promptly be asked to leave by the no-nonsense librarian. Ikki’s old student residence, now occupied by an enterprising graduate Rafael paid off to vacate for the hour.

Ironically enough, it’s a space with no particular sentimental value - a spot outside the college, under the summer rain, when Rafael proposes. There is no famous pop star, forty piece orchestra, elaborate sports cars, or a helicopter in sight. Just two best friends making a decision to spend their lives together.

The Proposal Series - Part 3: Ravi Reyes @ravireyes

On the late afternoon of June 21st, Rafael and his team of assistants FemEn interns help discreetly arrange the chairs for the London Symphony Orchestra (only the 40 principal musicians - it is just a private performance, after all). They lay in wait outside of the Reyes’ new home, where Rafael asked Ravi to meet for “official Seraphim business.” Upon Ravi’s arrival, the orchestra performs Despacito by Justin Bieber (purposefully, the same song that played when Ravi may or may not have twerked in front of Rafael Senior). The gesture attracts a fair bit of attention, even drawing out a few new neighbors to take photos and videos for their social media reels. Rafael is quick to adorn a ‘Best Person’ sash over Ravi’s shoulders.

“Let me be greedy, and have a Best Person, too.” Rafael says, with endearing charm that allows him to deposit a steady few books of blank wedding planners. Stacks of color-coordinated books (designed by Versace, of course) and the not-so-subtle implication of Ravi’s involvement in the Wedding of The Year.

The Proposal Series - Part 1: Marcus Reyes | @itsmarcusreyes

On Monday, June 20th at 7:00PM, Femenias Energy’s helicopter is primed and waiting atop the Tower’s helipad. Through a series of lies, Rafael convinces Marcus to join him on a ‘business dinner’ with a third party vendor for Femenias Energy’s latest green initiative. It’s what any good, human resources rep would do after all. In reality, Rafael has no intention to pursue any sort of boring initiative that involves paper straws. It’s simply a decoy, to get Marcus into the back of the helicopter. What awaits Marcus is bottle of Patron reserve, Cuban cigars, and an upbeat tune playing in the backseat. But the helicopter does not head to a country home in Surrey. Instead, it simply rotates to the front of the Femenias Energy tower. Under the night sky, the lit-window panels have been arranged (x) to spell:

“Marcus, Be My Best Man”

The lit sign lasts for a good few hours, prompting a flood of emails to Marcus’ phone asking when the power will come back on. Oh well. At least they have cigars, tequila, and the image of Ikki working in the dark with just a lit candle to humor them.
