Goodness! Just hopped back on tumblr - a lot has changed about my WIP since last summer, so some of the posts/intros I made then are grossly inaccurate to my work now. That’s alright, though, it means I’m moving forward :)

Hi everyone! I’ve been rather inactive on the blog, but I promise I’m still alive, and so is “A Phoenix’s Guide to Humans”. Just swamped with life things so I’ve taken a hiatus from social media! Thank you everyone for your support, I love you all 💛

A reminder to writers...

You have a story inside you.

Maybe you worry your ideas aren’t original enough. Maybe you think your plotlines are overdone. Maybe you feel your characters are too similar to already-existing ones.

Maybe sometimes, you wonder, “What’s the point? This story has been told a thousand times already. Maybe I should just...”

Stop right there.

Pretty much any trope, basic plotline, character archetype, etc. has been used before. But even if millions of similar stories are out there, none of them were told by you. None of them speak with your unique voice, and none of them ever will.

Only you can do that. Only you can tell your story, in your voice.

You have a story inside you, and only you can tell it.

A Phoenix’s Guide to Humans

About

Start Date: December 18, 2018

Genre: Fantasy (PG-13) - Hopepunk

Plot: Years ago, Sycamore Jin's mother disappeared into the "human world" and never returned. Fearful of the world outside the village borders, the other phoenixes forbade Sycamore from leaving to find her mother. But her days trapped in the nest are numbered.

When Sycamore saves a strange, featherless boy from a fire, he reveals himself as a human prince. Impressed by the phoenix's heroics, he offers her a position as his Royal Guard. Our sheltered firebird gratefully accepts his offer.

Finally, Sycamore can search for her mother - and learn about humans in the meantime. Will she soar in this new world, or will the darker side of humanity clip her wings?

Setting: Delra, a vast world inhabited by a diverse and powerful race called “humans”. Home to numerous cultures, all with different values and flaws.

Features: Wholesome themes, found family, redemption arcs, numerous LGBT+ characters and pairings, compassion, healing the world, love, humanity, a neurodivergent phoenix, a transgender prince, a friendship that transcends death

Other Characters

Myrtle Jin (intro coming soon): Sycamore’s baby brother. Good at hide-and-seek, especially in dire situations. Tag is #myrtle.

Activity Update

Hello everyone!

You may have noticed that although I’m officially “back” on Tumblr, my activity on this blog has been slower than usual. There are several things I’ll be working on this summer:

More volunteer hours (aiming for 300)

Potential law internship

Starting & finishing the next draft of A Phoenix’s Guide to Humans

Finishing the first draft of the prequel

The writing goals will also be part of Camp NaNoWriMo! I’m participating with @welcometowriteblr​ community, which is running a themed Percy Jackson event for the month’s event. I had a lot of fun earlier this month with the Harry Potter word crawl, so I’m excited for another event!

For the time being, I won’t be participating in ask events and tag games! But don’t worry if you send me an ask, tag, etc. I might not reply in a prompt manner, but I promise I’m not mad, upset, or in trouble!

Sycamore’s Feathers

Sycamore loves her feathers. Generally they remain hidden under long clothing, her wings clipped so her arms can fit into sleeves. She needs to pass as “human” for the time being. But she eagerly anticipates the day she can show off her plumage in all its fiery, colorful glory.

Here’s a ms paint diagram to show where the feathers are:

Sycamore’s wings do not extend from her back.

Sycamore does not have a rudderlike tail used for steering in flight. She’s flightless, and her tailfeathers are more decorative.

Figure 2: “Yes”

Fancy, decorative head plumage is commonly found on phoenix hens.

Her “eyebrows” are actually expressive, colorful feather crests. After trimming them, she dyed them black so they resemble human eyebrows.

Sycamore’s arms are feathered like wings (think wyvern but fluffy). The normal, human arm part is lined with smaller feathers.

Her torso and legs are also feathered, but her lower ankles and feet are bare.

She had lovely, peacocklike tailfeathers and was reluctant to part with them.
