Damon blinks his eyes open and squints against the harsh light. He thinks he hears a voice, but his ears are ringing. He groans as he tries to move, only to find he's chained to a chair.

"Oh look! Our little pet is awake!"

Wait a minute. Damon knows that voice. That's the man he was talking with last night at the bar. Damon feels a hand grab his hair and pull his head back sharp.

"Say hello, pet," the man says. Damon tries to say something, anything, but his voice is caught in his throat. "I told you to say hello," the man admonishes with a slap.

"H- hello?" Damon says, unsure why his mouth doesn't seem to want to cooperate.

"Give us a smile." The man - Adam, Damon remembers - sticks gloved fingers into his mouth and pulls his lips apart to show off his teeth. Damon looks ahead at a camera pointed straight at him, its red light blinking.

"He's docile right now, what with being so new, and as always, a little bit of sedative never hurts. Well, it doesn't hurt us." Adam laughs to himself and takes his fingers out of Damon's mouth. Damon tries to get the taste out but it sticks between his teeth like it was made to be there.

"Wha-" Damon coughs, his dry throat protesting. Every inch of him hurts. "What's going on?" he asks, too confused to be properly afraid.

"Oh, and it can speak. We'll have you properly trained in no time. Smile for the camera again, pet."

Damon bares his teeth with brows knitted. He doesn’t know why Adam wants this but Damon would rather not have the foul taste of cheap rubber gloves in his mouth again.

"It's already learning. Oh, you're going to be very good for me. What a good pet vampire!" Adam coos with false sincerity.

Vampire? did Adam just say- but Damon isn't- oh God. Damon looks into the lense of the camera and begins to shake.

He was turned.

Zahra Baker was an Australian girl born on November 16, 1999. Her mother, being unable to adequately care for her newborn due to postpartem depression, gave her up shortly after birth, leaving her under the care of Zahra’s father, Adam Baker. In 2005, she was diagnosed with bone cancer, and later suffered from lung cancer. As a result, she had to have one of her legs amputated (and replaced with a prosthetic leg) and required hearing aids. In spite of being dealt a hard life in the short amount of years she’d lived on earth, Zahra had an upbeat personality and a positive outlook on life. In 2007, Zahra and her father packed up their bags and moved to North Carolina in pursuit of a woman he had formed a relationship with online and eventually married, Elisa Fairchild. Little did the Bakers know, Adam couldn’t have possibly chosen a worse mother figure for his daughter, for she would turn out to be the embodiment of the classic ‘’Evil Stepmother’’ stereotype. 

Soon enough, Child Protective Services were investigating the Baker family on reports of child abuse. Once, Zahra had shown up to school with a black eye. Neighbors had also claimed Elisa was physically and emotionally abusive toward the little girl. On more than one occasion, she was seen trudging up and down the hill with her prosthetic leg while weeping. This wasn’t the first time Elisa would be investigated for child abuse. Dating as far back as 1999, CPS had intervened for her abusive behavior toward her own biological children. Eventually, Elisa began homeschooling Zahra instead, possibly to put an end to the rumors of abuse. 

In the early morning hours of October 9th, 2010, Elisa called the police to report a fire in the backyard of the family home. When the police arrived at the scene, they found a $1 million ransom note addressed to Adam’s boss and landlord, and the back of his company trunk smelled strongly of gasoline. Later in the afternoon, Adam called 911 to report his daughter missing. He believed that whoever set the fire and left that ransom note had mistook him for his boss and did it as a distraction in order to kidnap Zahra, mistaking her for his boss’ daughter. All of this would later be proven to be a complete and utter lie when cadaver dogs picked up the scent of human remains within the Bakers’ vehicles. More startlingly, it was found that Zahra had actually been dead for weeks. Elisa claimed that she died of sickness and both she and Adam dismembered her body in the bathtub and disposed of it together, although investigators believe Elisa acted alone.

Police were able recover most of Zahra’s remains, including her prosthetic leg. The exact cause of Zahra’s death remains unknown and was simply ruled as ‘’undetermined violent homicide’’. Elisa was charged with second-degree murder and sentenced to 18 years. Zahra’s father was never implicated in his daughter’s murder due to a lack of evidence.
