Of Monsters and Men / Lance & Adam
@adambatesvampire
There was little to be said about Lance Alton. The known facts were these: he was Lorelei’s twin, he was an Alton, and he wanted legs and feet for his tail. Other than that, there wasn’t much about him --- especially not underwater. His pod knew him as the Alton son, the obedient one, the one who wouldn’t so much as hurt a fly. And that was that. That was that. Lance Alton could be summarized by these, and he had never minded, no. He didn’t mind that there was little to be said about him, and he didn’t mind that there was more to be said about others. He was fine, fine like this.
But just because there wasn’t much to say about him did not mean that he did not have much to say about anyone else. There was this truth that Lance was not the brightest fish around, but this did not mean that he did not think. That he did not remember. That he did not hurt. That he did not feel. He remained quiet about all that he knew, but this did not mean that he did not know. There were opinions in his head that he could not bring himself to say to anyone. There were thoughts that filled the back of his mind, memories that he could not suppress. These were as real as any --- even if they only belonged to Lance Alton.
And so, when he saw the vampire who had taken away the life of a pod member, Lance knew, at once.
It might as well have been as though the vampire’s face were etched in his mind. It might a well have been as though the event that transpired between the vampire and the mermaid that he’d killed happened yesterday, and not all those years ago, when Lance was but a little merboy. It might as well have been; it might as well have been.
He was looking a monster straight in the eyes, and he was remembering.
The proper thing to do would have been to run as far as he can, but instead, words came out of Lance’s mouth. “Y--You”---the words tripped over themselves---”You--- monster.”
