Book Review: Talking With God by Adam Weber

Prayer. 

Prayer is an important thing, one that many believers struggle with. Whether it’s not knowing what to pray about or not knowing how often you should talk to God, this book really gives a good understanding of prayer.

This book really focuses on the different aspects of prayer and shows how really simple it is to talk with God. It’s filled with humor and stories about his own life and how he has grown in his relationship with God. 

It’s simply a wonderful book that I’d recommend to anyone looking to know more about prayer and about God.

A child’s prayer

I’ve been reading, Talking with God, by Adam Weber. I’m currently in the 4th chapter titled “Short. Simple. Honest.” In this chapter he starts discussing how his children’s prayers are short, simple, and honest.

I shared that message with my 4 year old son, and he immediately wanted to pray, just like those kids in the book. For the past couple of days all he wants to do is pray. It’s great to see him express himself through prayer and also to hear his heart. Sometimes his prayers don’t make sense and are just flat out ridiculous, literally, I have to hold back from laughing, and other times they touch my heart and I have to hold back some tears.

Here are a few of his prayers:

Thank you for mommy, for daddy, for Izzie, and for the bunny.

God make all the girls cute and make all the boys handsome.

Let mommy and daddy dance with me.

Pray for Pastor Dan, he’s awesome, make him more awesome.

God help me to not be afraid.

I love that he’s getting bold with his prayers or at least that its becoming something that he wants to do. His prayers are simple, short, and honest. They let me get a quick peek into his heart, into what truly matters to him.

Let’s encourage our children to pray, lets give them the platform to pray, and lets be the model that will shape their prayer life.

It’s movie awards season again. That breathless time of year that starts with the Golden Globes and climaxes with the Oscars, at which point we are all pretty tired of the hoo-ha and ready to move on. That repeated cackle of “who are you wearing,” the sight of brilliant artists teetering down red carpets, and media stories concocted by publicists all wear thin after a while. We adore movies, and of course we secretly love some of the silliness; it’s part of our culture to cheerfully obsess with trivia while the world implodes.

We need more of India’s artists, not less!

            Tomorrow we Disappear is a heart-touching film following the lives of some incredible street performers in Kathputli, India, the very last colony of India’s traditional artists. The filmmaker revealed the political controversy in Kathputli that is causing the street performers to no longer be able to do the things that they love: magic, puppet shows, acrobatics, etc. This film did an incredible job at tugging on your heart strings, because the identities of these people are completely being erased, and I could not imagine that happening to me. I liked how the filmmaker made you gain a liking for each character first by showing the audience their incredible talents, and then giving you glimpses of their personalities. Then, when the problem was presented, you had more sympathy for the characters, because you felt like you knew them and connected with them. If he had just followed the story of the problem they are facing in the beginning, it would not have been as effective.
