Michael had been up and out of bed before John could even reach for his glasses. Of the two brothers, he had always been the most active; the most impulsive. The youngest. John stood back and thought about things, he had always been the one to decide what they were to do, even as children. And while Michael trusted his judgement as implicitly as only a younger brother could, he valued the return and safety of his older sister above anything else in the world.
They had worked too hard to find one another again. Every shadow had become Pan’s, every night terror some horrible sign. No Darling was ignorant to the ways and influences of Peter. And Michael had hurried to Wendy’s room at the very first sign of distress.
He stood in the doorway now, half clutching the frame as if he were worried it might suddenly topple in on them. His eyes were wide, his night shirt half untucked, hair askew. Almost unconsciously his gaze flickered, momentarily, to the tightly locked bedroom window.
"Are you sure?" he asked, breathlessly.
It had been a dream like the ones that were haunting Wendy ever since her return from Neverland. It might not have been what everyone else thought was haunting her, but she let them believe what they wanted, because it was much easier this way. Wendy tried to take a deep breath as she looked around. The window was tightly shut and the sky was still dark, indicating that they wouldn´t see daylight for another few hours.
Her eyes fell on her younger brother then, who was standing by the door, looking at her. He seemed startled, as much as Wendy was, so she simply nodded as she pushed her covers back to get up. "Yes, don´t worry." she told him, taking another deep breath as she moved towards the door, a little wobbly on her feet. "It was just a dream, I´m sorry that I´ve woken you up,"
Wendy knew that either of them was easily startled these days. Michael and John probably from fear of Peter returning and Wendy because she had learned to have a light sleep in case someone, or something, from the forest attacked and they had to defend themselves. "You should go back to sleep, I´ll be fine,"
