adder and august have been best friends since they were six years old because one of each of their parents works together (i'm thinking as healers in the same hospital?)
august has two dads and used to have a kind of iffy relationship with them where they struggled to connect with each other, but since she came out to them and started transitioning they've gotten a whole lot closer
adder has a mom and a dad and ey's never been very close to them at all and still isn't out to them with no plans on changing that anytime soon
adder was the first person august came out to and vice-versa towards the early-middle of their fourth year; the conversation began something like "adder, i'm a girl" "oh. well, i'm not" "[beat]" "[a full minute of violent and raucous laughter]"
august came out to her dads in the break nearing that and they were 100% totally supportive of her
adder wouldn't switch names and pronouns until ey was sure ey'd found the perfect ones though. it took about a month to decide on "adder" because it stuck out among all the other snakey names ey looked at, and about another month to decide on ey/em/eirs. "xe" was a close contender and ey thought ey might end up switching to them, but once august started using "ey" pronouns for em, ey knew they were perfect.
august spent all year choosing a new name for herself. she discussed it with adder and in letters to her dads. she'd tried "autumn" for a bit but didn't like how soft and pretty it sounded, and she decided on August because it's her favorite month; the temperature is perfect and it's the start of the end of the season but it's also the start of a renewal too.
august was not born in august, though.
adder cannot stand august the month. ey gets way too fucking cold
august's dads spent weeks cooing over how perfect august's new name was when she got home in a very Embarrassing Dad kind of way
