Addison is seconds away from falling asleep, when she hears Rue mumble "I'm sorry you have to put up with me."
It was almost a whisper and Addison wasn't sure she was supposed to hear it.
"What?" she asked, opening her eyes. She rolled around until she was looking Rue in the eyes. She was burrowed in Addison's neon pink hoodie, with tears running down her face. Addison wanted to reach out and comfort her, to hug her and never let her go. But she wasn't sure if that was allowed. Their friendship was still tentative. She didn't want to knock down any walls that weren't even built yet.
"I'm sorry you have to put up with me," Rue repeated, sniffling. "I'm a shitty friend. I make you worried all the time and I forgot your birthday and I make everything difficult for everyone."
Addison's heart was breaking in her chest. Was that really how Rue saw herself? Saw their relationship?
"Rue," she said, biting the bullet and pulling her into a hug. "That's not true at all. You're not a shitty friend, in the slightest."
"But-"
"But nothing." Feeling bold, Addison pressed her lips just under Rue's eye, as a tear fell onto her cheek. "You're a great friend. Stop beating yourself up, okay?"
Rue nodded, looking a bit less upset. She rubbed her eyes before wrapping her arms around Addison's back. Addison sighed in relief before closing her eyes again and drifting off to sleep.
A memory that your character cherishes + addison!
addy has a very fond memory of being 6 and playing with her older sister in a swimming pool! she kind of latches onto it when she gets sick and is separated from her for a while :(
