here's some angst
cw: mentioned underage drinking
-
August knew he shouldn't have been drinking the punch at the dance because it was definitely spiked with something. It had tasted like nail polish remover with a hint of fruit punch, but he drank it anyway. Anything to distract him from seeing Ricky there, with Big Red of all people, in his stupid suit.
So he was stumbling home, on the wrong side of tipsy, trying to clear his head to avoid getting yelled at by his parents.
He didn't think Ricky would go to the dance if Nini wasn't going. It didn't seem like his scene and it definitely didn't fit into whatever his plan to get Nini back was. But he was there anyway. And every time August would look at him, he'd look back.
At one point, he started to walk towards August and he looked like he had a question, so August quite literally ran away, which was kind of rude and a little embarrassing, but it had to be done. He didn't know what he would've done if Ricky had asked him to dance or something. Probably would've said yes, which wouldn't have been beneficial for either them.
Something caught his eye, interrupting his train of thought. In a car beside him was Ricky and ...Gina? What in the world?
He stepped closer to get a better look and his heart stopped. Gina was leaning towards Ricky and he wasn't moving away.
Were they kissing? What the hell?
A moment later, Gina was climbing out of the car and jumping out of her skin when she saw August standing there.
"Hey Gus..." she said, voice tight with confusion. She looked incredibly weirded out, which made sense because August wouldn't expect him to just be standing there either, but he couldn't focus on that.
"You move on fast, huh?" he called to Ricky, a mean smile taking over his face.
"What?" Gina said, sounding even more confused than before.
"That's not fair! You dumped me," Ricky responded from inside the car. "And nothing even happened!"
"Oh my God," Gina muttered.
Ricky climbed out of the car and he walked around it to stand in front of August and Gina.
"Are you drunk?" he asked, watching August sway in place. It felt like everything was spinning.
"Maybe, mind your own business."
Gina laughed like she couldn't help it despite the concern on her face.
"You made it my business when you started yelling at me," Ricky grumbled. That was a good point, but August wouldn't let him win.
"Why were you two kissing? What about Nini?" he said, crossing his arms over his chest.
"We weren't kissing. I kissed his cheek because he wasn't being a complete jerk-off for once," Gina said with a laugh.
Well now August felt stupid. "Oh."
"Why don't I drive you home? So Gina can go inside before she gets yelled at," Ricky said. August huffed but nodded.
Nothing good ever happened when he got into cars with Ricky but his feet were starting to hurt and the world was still spinning, so it wasn't like he had a choice.
Gina and Ricky helped him into the car and said their goodbyes then it was just him and Ricky in silence.
"What was that about Auggie?" Ricky asked as they turned onto his street.
"Don't wanna talk about it. I'll puke on you if you make me talk about it."
Ricky stopped the car in front of August's house and turned to look at him. He looked so pretty in the half yellow light half darkness. August looked away so he didn't do something stupid.
"We can't not talk about it," Ricky stressed. August shrugged.
"You're never gonna love me, so what's the use?" he said. "There's no point in having any kind of conversation about it."
"What?" Ricky asked. He sounded genuinely confused. He would have to stay that way because August choose that moment to get out of the car. It was easier that way.
Sorry not sorry.
