The season 7 babies all grown up. Love these people :)
would you say that they tried to give the arrogant image to adéchiké? i feel like they tried to make him look more of an opportunist of some sort than really like an arrogant guy but yeah they still pretty much tried to make people dislike him
Yeah, he got a terrible Vegas edit, and then they treated him like complete shit for the whole season, especially Mia. Even Cat had to stick up for him because it was just getting silly. I'm not sure they tried to make him seem arrogant, though...just unlikeable. Which backfired, lol.
Have you seen Adechike and Karla from season 5 dance to Latch? /watch?v=97dKmJcuWWA they need to bring him back as an all-star (ya know if Nigel would actually acknowledge his existence).
I wish they would bring AdeChike back, but I wouldn't if I were him just because the judges were so hilariously rude to him the entire damn time he was there. But I said the same about Melinda and she came back, so you never know.
So after watching the solos you listed, I think that I like AdeChike and Billy's solos the best. What I like about them is that neither of them rely on tricks, but instead they have this crazy musicality. Like, I don't know how they hear the music because I could never choreograph something like what they do. Plus I agree about Billy's solos having a beginning, middle and end. It's nice to see it actually finish instead of just stopping, ya know?
I think AdeChike and Billy were the strongest overall soloists, definitely. Billy just has some otherworldly talent going on, and AdeChike was older than everyone and had developed his own style, so I think that’s why. Like, they know they don’t have to just do over 9000 turns and 9000 leaps and flips to make a solo work. And yes, it drives me crazy when they just stop or they just throw one last trick during the SYTYCD part at the end.
Billy’s musicality is why I would have liked to see him attempt the stepping routine. I mean, the krump was awful, yes, but I think he might have been able to pull it off because he obviously knows how to deal with beats. He even said that it was his favorite even though he never got to do it, so maybe it would have been awesome even without tWitch.
#4: "Sir" (AdeChike #4, Top 4)
Each time I watch him solo, I get confused all over again. Like, he is everything Nigel should want in a male dancer. He's strong, he's "masculine" or whatever, and he has amazing technique. I guess that's why they put him in the top 20 to begin with, but I just cannot understand what their issue was with him for the entire run of the show. I should probably stop trying to make sense of the judging in season 7.
Anyway, I love this solo a lot. AdeChike is such a mature dancer, and it was just glaringly obvious next to his competition. I also just really love the jerky/sharp movements and musicality because it reminds me of hip-hop.
Another thing: those must be the stretchiest jeans ever made. I never understand when these guys come out and do splits in jeans. How do you not hurt yourself? I can't even do a high kick in jeans, wtf.
#7: "This Woman's Work" (AdeChike #2, Top 6)
Even though the judges had a great time inventing things to hate on AdeChike for during his run on the show, at least none of them could deny that he's one hell of a soloist. He, like Billy, has his own clear style when he dances, and I really appreciate seeing that.
When he's doing other people's choreography, his stiff shoulders sometimes seemed awkward, but when he's doing his own solos, it's clear that having a strong carriage is just how he dances and it's probably a really hard habit to break. If I ever had to wildly guess, I'd say it probably could have helped him if he ever got a quickstep or something since a lot of contemporary guys have no idea how to hold their shoulders still.
I pretty much just really love AdeChike and I wish that he weren't do hopelessly underrated by everyone because he doesn't deserve it. :(
#6: "Freak" (AdeChike, Ashley, Robert, Courtney, Neil jazz showcase)
Again, this was before the novelty of Sonya group routines wore off, so I remember seeing this for the first time and being really excited. It also gave us things that we'll probably never see again, such as Neil in a Sonya routine. Also AdeChike. He didn't work with Sonya the whole season.
I don't really know why I love this so much. I guess it's just like That One Sonya Jazz, just with more people and to a really catchy song with a great group of dancers that all work well together. I can even overlook the fact that you can't tell Ashley and Courtney apart for most of it and Neil got more screen time than either Robert or AdeChike even though this is supposed to be their showcase.
On another note, season 7 is also the one season that everyone had showcases that weren't really in their style. The contemporary dancers had jazz, the ballet dancer had contemporary, the salsa dancer had samba, and the breaker had hip-hop. Wtf were they even doing in season 7.
