I put the tiefling maker to evil use. Behold: Adelard the Silent (who is more of a strawberry blonde but RIP, not an option)...

And Danae, the Autumn Shrike:

Both Vanserra bastards, with very different skillsets, knowledge, and general moralities.

Adelard is half-fey, the result of a dalliance of one of the non-Eris/Lucien brothers who is bound to silence in exchange for being able stay alive in the Mortal Lands. Danae is a Calenmai-blessed bastard daughter of Beron himself who inherited his cunning, power, and general shittiness (part of why she is one of his few acknowledged children outside of LoA). Both are OCs who show up (or will show up) in Of Swords and Sorrows and its potential spinoffs.

i was asked months ago what i think dekker looks like and it literally took me until Now to pin down a reference this close to exactly how i picture him, thanks to @treeroutes! and so, behold.

Dekker can't smoke weed cause he's a rabbi . But if he could, he wouldn't know what to do with a blunt. He would try to eat it.

Yes, yes, and yes. To add on:

The problem with Trevor is that smoking a normal amount of weed doesn't do anything for him. He has to smoke at least 5 blunts to feel as high as most people get from smoking like, one. He started when he had cancer for pain relief purposes, but now he continues even after being supernaturally resurrected because nothing else gets him to chill the fuck out.

Jurgen is just... a lightweight when it comes to any kind of drug. Just a complete bitch. He called 999 after smoking a quarter of Trevor's blunt. Unfortunately he wants to drink whiskey to look like a Cultured Academic so at parties he'll always be holding a glass of it and pretending to sip but he can't drink more because he knows he'll die.

Adelard: Initially thought the blunt Trevor gave him was a hidden explosive. Was very disappointed to find out it was food, apparently (???) and informed Trevor that he wasn't sure if it was kosher so he couldn't try it. He then got wistful over Gertrude because all of the apparent food she handed him was explosives, and he misses that.

[wakes up] thinking fondly about how adelard’s entire family is full of people who do not let you shorten their names into a nickname to the point where it’s just sort of their Thing. “adelard” invites no severing. his sister bernadene isn’t a bernie, isn’t a deedee, she is bernadene to you. his wife jacqueline is not a jackie, she is jacqueline. his daughters are chaiyala, iphigenia, judith and laylah. not chai, not nia, not judy, not anything else but who they are in full. if you can’t say their names the right way then you must be talking to someone else.

it’s really important to me that this is emphasized and respected, in the sense that they demand this respect, but so do i on their behalf? especially iphigenia, i mean, that is the name her parents gave her when she asked them to help her decide who she was really going to walk through this life as and it’s a name she is deeply proud of and it’s also a name that a lot of people may ignorantly mock or tease. but it, like her father’s name, like her aunt’s, is a name so heavy and rich that it commands wholeness. you will call her iphigenia and she will respond to nothing else.

adelard dekker is such a powerful name and he rises to that expectation of grace and intensity on purpose and without waver. he lives up to the name he chose for himself as a trans man in the 60s-70s, that he chose as homage to the family that shaped him before he started building his own. it’s really fun to play with the concept of tradition in his family and i love that being one that runs through it, just — a capacity for that larger than life disposition, even if it takes a different form in each of them.

i LOVE him so MUCH!!!!

i’m gonna also say here really quick because i’m just TOO excited about it: it’s important to me that i say his wife is straight and cis! it’s a story i really want to acknowledge, where like... she always saw him as a man pre-transition and didn’t stop when he came out to her, y’know? and never questioned her own grasp on sexuality just because of it, either. 

there’s a lot of value and love in that narrative, too, and i really wanted to write it especially with them being so much older, too. a lot of online spaces today have gotten to a point where we either refuse to think this is possible, or cling way too desperately to performative demonization of certain things to an extreme that treats them like a monolith & alienates people who experience them with a nuance that isn’t covered by broad statements like “straight people are the worst.” like... yeah the institution is a monster, but it’s also powered predominantly by white cis heterosexuality, and neither of these characters would have experienced that anyway.

i just want to tell a thousand different love stories in as many ways as i can. love is real and so is transhet dekker thank you and goodnight.

Still staring at her, he nods once to the left. Sasha turns her head slowly to follow his indication, only tearing her gaze from his when eye contact becomes a strain to her periphery. She glances at Gerry’s office door and then back to Tim, hoping fruitlessly for his expression to change. It sure doesn’t.

“…Oh, honey.”

Or: Tim asks Sasha for advice, and they have a long overdue talk about grief and connection. He and Gerry end up on a similar topic a few days later when he asks to hear about some of Gerry’s friends from his life before the Institute.
