A Device To Assist Those With ADHD?
I read an article on New Life Outlook about a device called SoundSense. The device is supposed to help with focus by vibrating when activated by a certain volume of sound.
This intrigues me. On one hand, I don’t really see how it works. Would it be going off whenever you are in a noisy place, like a restaurant or store? Worn in a school or work environment, there will always be times when noise is at a higher level. The vibrations could then be more distracting.
However, if worn at school, I can see where it may keep vibrating as long as the teacher is lecturing which could cause a person to stay focused in the moment and listen to the lesson. As long as the room was quiet otherwise, this could have its benefits. And at work, it could help a person pay attention in meetings.
I think this is one of those things that may be wildly helpful to some but not very useful to others. This is true of most technology, apps, or tricks for helping us to control our ADHD symptoms. We each have to decide what works for our individual needs. If it could help, it would be a worthwhile investment.
To me, this device could help a score of individuals with disabilities, but I see it having more benefits for the blind or hearing impaired than I do for ADHD.
