Washington State teachers deserve better pay

American Federation of Teachers Washington (AFT-WA) has a bill that’s going to the Washington State Senate. 6,500 community & technical college teachers and pre-K-12 classified employees are asking for help in getting adjunct faculty paid a reasonable wage. The bill would require community colleges to pay adjunct faculty at 85% pay parity with full-time faculty members.

Right now, Washington colleges pay part time faculty basically whatever they want. The Seattle Colleges District currently pays adjuncts around 74% of full time faculty. And the AFT local 1789-SCD collective bargaining agreement is likely one of the better agreements!

If I may, I would like to leave in your care this notebook planner. It is for Adjunct - whoever it is that takes the safename Adjunct next. It has become not a name but a title with inherited duties. Useful in that the Other Folk do not see you as anyone but the same Adjunct that came before, but dangerous for the same reason. I've held onto the title as long as I can and cleared as many outstanding favours as I could, but my time at Elsewhere is now up and graduation calls.

I will keep it safe for them. I think this must be a burden someone willingly picks up, rather than something I can impose, but they will find their way to it eventually.

Ugh, so mad. My wife got us tickets for an event sometime during the pandemic. It’s been rescheduled umpteen times and now there is a conflict with the class I teach. Keep in mind, I picked this class up with five days notice as a massive favor. I contacted the person who was originally going to teach it, since he had scheduled a guest speaker. He was happy to provide coverage. However, it got back to the department chair, who chewed me out because apparently that’s in violation of his contract. I’m just expected be there and reschedule my event. So now poor Allison will be stuck attending a wrestling event by herself while I sit there and stew. I shall now grumble and watch Jared Harris to calm myself.

Here is the photo I took of me and my work for the profile, and here is the quote I provided: “Summer of 2019 I got the call to teach the Zines and Products for MoCCA class (which I now call Products and Publications for alliteration’s sake). Up to that point I had only taught after school for elementary school students but I had been tabling at a wide range of comics expos, zine festivals, and art book fairs all over the continent for years starting with MoCCA in 2010. So I was excited to teach something I thought I would be uniquely qualified for. Exploring the infinite possibilities of comics and zines with my students (now both in that class and also my new Cartooning class) is endlessly inspiring to me since the only limit to this medium is what you bring to it with your imagination and experience. I think these classes give students a really special opportunity to create narrative work from their individual perspectives and I have loved seeing what they come up with given that freedom. Drawing and writing your own comics and zines means not waiting for someone else to tell you what to draw and showcasing the passion that brought you to art school in the first place.
