BOOM! We went to Tampa today for the Adjunct Day of Action with some civil disobedience. Instead, WE LAUNCHED THE VERY FIRST UNION FOR ADJUNCTS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA. Hillsborough Community College adjuncts will unionize with the Service Employees International Union. Cards are being distributed for signing, Letters of support are being signed! The scheduled solidarity event became a history making meeting with signs and a banner (with speakers).

The Master of Ceremony, none other than C. Abraham Bellamy, introduced all the incredibly terrific speakers, which included adjunct faculty, Fightfor15, Child Care Workers, and yes, students! Tears flowed let me tell you! Hillsborough adjunct Eric Fiske identified the day that he had ENOUGH. That when many of us here met him: he spoke out on National Adjunct Walkout Day and was in the news.
The SEIU union rep. on the ground, Ashley Renner from TN, who’s never lost a campaign, was there. So was Becky Killik, the one and only organizer who has been there from DAY ONE. Both just returned from their BIG Duke University WIN. Once the 30% of cards are signed, Hillsborough adjuncts and their organizer are on the way to having the first adjunct faculty contract in the state of Florida. In the deepest Deep South. Pictures are pending.
Organizers Ashley Renner and Becky Killik are already strategizing their next move. A very large university looks promising. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF THE ADJUNCTS ON THE WEST COAST of FLORIDA, ALL THEIR SUPPORTERS and the wonderful, tireless SEIU ORGANIZERS.
SPD ADJUNCTS WHOSE WORK WE CELEBRATE / WE STAND IN SOLIDARITY WITH
It's an awful time in the the higher education system. With less and less money, no job security at this condensary, and health insurance a luxury, everyone's institutional fatigue is so so deep. Well, whatever. We at SPD stand in solidarity with every poet-adjunct toiling and unionizing and doing the work of trying to teach, survive, fight and do right by each other all at once. Contracts may be precarious but poetry books will last forever (lol). With admiration, we give four million ratemyprofessor.com chilli peppers to each of you.
Support the fight for adjunct unions / activism (reading this is a good start) and remember to support their creative labor by reading their work.

Kevin MahoneyEditor Zero and founder of the Raging Chicken Press lays out the recent plot by University President to raise tuition while not raising tuition. #NAAW | Temple University Adjuncts Take to the Streets Demanding Admin to Stop Union-Busting and Let Adjunct Vote for Unionization
Today is the first day of National Adjunct Action Week and Temple University adjuncts started the week off with a march outside the university’s provost office. Last December, Temple University adjuncts filed for authorization with the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board clearing the way for an official union vote on campus this spring semester. Or so they thought.
