Honestly, I’m starting to like Pearl and Marina’s less and less after seeing terrible fanart where Pearl is reduced to “baby gremlin” and Marina is drawn with more revealing clothing than she already is. It’s very tiring seeing stuff like this over and over again. Nintendo’s at fault here with Marina, as there have plenty of posts criticizing them for their design choices of dark skinned female characters. But the fans are also to blame here with the way they make fanart of her more sexualized than she already is. Really, just look around in the tags.
It also makes me uneasy when I see ship art of both of them because of their ambiguous ages. Marina is most likely an adult (assuming from the outfit choice Nintendo gave her) while Pearl is possibly underage (or just a short adult but we still don’t know!) I really want to like these characters and enjoy the game but the fandom makes it very hard no matter how much I try to avoid them.
Yes, we can enjoy Nintendo and their games but it’s very important to look at them critically as well. The “anti-discourse Reggie” seems harmless on paper but we have cannot ignore the unfortunate ways Nintendo has treated the LGBT community (Tomodachi Life and Fire Emblem) and their dark skinned characters (LoZ, FE, Pokemon)
hi!! can i have some more info on mintyfreshmilk? i've seen their art a few times before on da but i honestly thought they just did cutesy stuff, what have they done that's gross/bad? sorry i'm just curious since i'm filling my block list with nsfw splatoon artists
I’ll provide some links from past asks in addition to some new information.
here here here here
While it is true, Minty says that they’re fat and trans but still avoids the issue that two of their characters were aged up and then put in the (now deactivated) nsfw blog.
Minty, you’re not a trans girl, your squidsona shouldn’t be a trans girl. Especially an underage one that you sexualized.
Minty claims that they didn’t send people to stalk a minor but-
“spies on the inside” implies otherwise.
Why are people so hell-bent on being neutral on pedophilia and bigotry? Don't they realize they are just enabling the perpetrator?
it took less than a week for Whipple to make porn of Marina, and Tammy to advertise it. smh. :|
I blame Nintendo for Marina’s poor design but it’s also nice to know that these people want to be this nasty with a Black character who’s age hasn’t been mentioned yet. Also, don’t minors see these things? Why is he promoting nsfw things on his sfw blog?
it looks like tamarinfrog is getting into ARMS now. maybe we'll be blessed and she'll leave the splatoon fandom alone for good!
- the ARMS fandom, probably
Shame on the so-called adults in this hell fandom who defend their fellow adult friends when they do/say nasty (racist/transphobic/pedophilic) shit. You’d rather stan for your disgusting friend than take the side of people of color/trans people/children harmed by your friend’s words/actions. What the fuck is wrong with you?
It’s also hilarious when they whine about “UUUGHH TUMBLR CALLOUT CULTURE POSTING NOTHING BUT FAKE NEWS” when the receipts on their nasty friends are like, right there. Open your eyes and face the facts, some of your friends are absolute shit and you’re no better by defending them.
There’s things you just can’t take a neutral stance on. In this recent scenario, you’re either part of the ass-kissers that enable white faves to continue depicting awful stereotypes of characters of color or you become vocal against them. To say you’re “neutral” is to remain silent on the matter, and that only helps the ass-kissing side.
I love Splatoon, and like all media, it can reflect our real-world views. No matter what, there’s always going to be racists, transphobes, homophobes and other sorts of people that bring hate into the fandom and all others.
I, like many others wish bigotry didn’t exist in both the real world and fantasy but that’s not the kind of world we live in. The Splatoon fandom isn’t perfect when it comes to depicting characters of color, fat characters, trans characters, and gay characters and even treating people who are that way! We really need to do some introspection on the hateful things we learned when we were younger. It’s better to combat hate than just sit silently and/or ignore these problems altogether.
Even worse is when somebody calls you out and all you do is paint yourself the victim, cry and hide rather than to think about your actions. Instead of doing that, look into your biases and fight them. That’s the mature thing to do.
