we recently got an ask about characters with heavier canon backgrounds and whether portrayals of them would be welcomed, and we wanted to answer that more broadly in case others have similar questions.

the short answer is yes. this is, first and foremost, an alternate universe. while canon provides the foundation, we are not interested in policing "correct" interpretations of characters or reducing them to fandom consensus. members are more than welcome to adapt canon muses in ways that make them more sympathetic, more morally complicated, softer, harsher, more politically involved, less redeemable, or otherwise entirely different from how wider fandom spaces traditionally understand them. we would much rather see thoughtful, personal takes on these characters than strict adherence to the more popularly accepted interpretations. that said, for those who do prefer portrayals closer to canon, we are currently finalizing lore about one mister "lord gaunt" (aka. tom riddle), the political movement surrounding him and the broader impact of his ideology on this setting. we hope to have that material added to the document soon, as we imagine it might be helpful for prospective players of muses canonically affiliated with the death eaters to determine whether they would like to engage with those dynamics. ultimately, this is intended to be a collaborative and welcoming writing space, and we will not stand by and watch any of our members be alienated for writing complex characters.

What age range will the characters be in? And are we strictly only allowed to play golden trio era characters or will adult (marauders era) characters be allowed?

great question, nonnie, thank you for the chance to tackle that ! in short, characters should be 19+ ( typical debut age would be 21, for reference ) and primarily drawn from the golden trio and marauders era, though we'll admit occasional exceptions. for a more detailed explanation — because the events of the books have little to no impact on this setting, we've decided canon ages are largely irrelevant and may be adjusted as necessary, provided sibling birth order and family structures are respected. so if you wanted to apply for neville, he would not necessarily have to be the exact same age as harry, because the story of the roleplay doesn't require them to have been in the same exact year at school together. but if you wanted to apply for a weasley, for example, you could potentially tweak their ages a little, but you couldn't make ginny older than ron or charlie younger than the twins. because so much of the lore is original, we're also willing to accept applications for some of the marauders ( or other eras ) canons as contemporaries of the main cast, instead of relegating them to a purely parental generation. this has the caveat of being on a bit of a "first come, first serve" basis, however — if we accept an application for a twenty-year-old harry, we can't then go and accept an application for a twenty-year-old james, as well. i hope that makes sense. if you still have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask !

Are there characters you won’t let us play? And are we allowed to make our characters a little more redeemable and less evil, since this is a muggle AU?

hi, anon! thank you so much for the ask! currently listed as npcs (and whose npc status we're unwilling to change) are barty crouch jr. and tom riddle himself, who are both in jail. because dearest minnie is our beloved queen, she is also unavailable to players. as for the second part of your question: the world is your oyster! we're all very excited to see what players come up with when adapting these characters to the lore and setting of the roleplay, and there are endless opportunities for taking canon muses in both softer and more vicious directions.
