Administration Error (Teaser)

“Oh, it seems your name isn’t in our program sweetie. Mackenzie Reid?” She spelt out the name, both Mackenzie and Marie nodded in response. Mackenzie toyed with a loose thread on the arm of the chair she sat in.
“Hold on. Let me check the whole board” They sat for a few more minutes as the secretary mumbled to herself ad scrolled through her computer. “Ah, here you are. You seem to be enrolled in..” She paused, her face scrunched in confusion. “Southview School For Boys”
Mackenzie's eyes went wide. “So you mean to tell me that I’m enrolled in an all boys school? That can’t be right” She leaned forward in the chair, her heart started pounding. This was not fine. This isn’t okay Kenzie. This is the opposite of fine.
“Hey, Mackenzie I need to you calm down okay?” The secretary spoke as Marie rubbed her back gently. “This will take a bit to fix but until then I suppose you’ll have to attend Southview. Shouldn't take more than a week or two” It’s a school board. A week or two means at least a month. Who knows how long you could be stuck in there?
Mackenzie sighed and rubbed at her forehead as Marie spoke to the secretary. She was too busy trying to calm herself down to listen to what they were saying. Next thing she knew, aunt Marie was pulling at her arm, signalling that they were leaving.
They got in the car and drove off, Mackenzie spoke up almost immediately. “So.. what’s happening?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean with the schools. Like, am I just not going until they fix it or-” Mackenzie was cut off by her aunt.
“Oh no you’re going” Marie spoke sternly
“But aunt Marie it's an all boys school. I’m not a boy” Mackenzie protested
“No buts. Your education is important. Besides, they already have a schedule for you and you’re on the attendance. It’s a sister school. Uniforms are almost identical and the curriculum is the same” Mackenzie had never heard her aunt speak this authoritatively.
‘Mackenzie huffed as she leaned back in her seat, arms crossed over her chest. “Hey. Don’t give me that attitude. You are going to school. It’ll get fixed soon and you’ll be out of there. It’s simply an error, that’s all.”
Mackenzie shook her head and looked out the window as she chewed on the inside of her cheek. Yeah. Then I’ll have to be the foreign, new kid all over again.
As much as she didn’t want to, Mackenzie was left without a choice.
