Rethinking engineering education in a world struck by a pandemic

The world is going through a pandemic and just like any other sector, university engineering courses were severely disrupted by Covid-19 and all the educational institutions came to a halt on March 23rd, 2020 when the country entered into the phase of a lockdown. Normal engineering students would remember their days in college as lab experiments, long lectures, late-night studies, and extracurricular activities but not for the students of the year 2020. The students couldn’t go to colleges and attend regular classes. In a few days, lectures went online; students started taking their classes from home, in no way lab work was possible. 

All this led to many questions haunting students pursuing or wanting to pursue engineering like what is the future of engineering? Will engineers have jobs in a post-pandemic world? Is it actually possible to teach engineering online? Nobody has exact answers to these questions but that doesn’t mean that the future is dreadful. In such times engineering needs to reinvent itself. 

To reinvent itself the first step that engineering education has to do is to inculcate within itself a strong element of ready to take challenges approach that includes finding solutions to big global problems such as climate change, agriculture, health, education, infrastructure so on and so forth. This will not only bring in more innovation and creativity in engineering education but will also create jobs for graduate students, which is the need of the hour. Engineering colleges have to make sure that students get trained at a very initial stage to find solutions to these great challenges. 

Another thing that needs to be understood is that providing solutions to complex issues needs interplay of different disciples of engineering. Colleges should concentrate on high technology subjects, largely supporting increasingly complex scientific developments without hampering traditional engineering. Engineering disciplines have to adapt to this new reality. It has not only to integrate more with pure sciences but integrates better with humanities and social sciences too.

The most important element of this re-invention is to imbibe an innovator and entrepreneurial mindset amongst engineering students. Engineering education has to become more experimental where a student should be encouraged to ‘innovate’ and ‘build’ along with theoretical knowledge. Engineering students should be encouraged to go and work in the industry in the middle of their semesters to have access to fresh ideas, exposure, and validation of their interests.

The post-pandemic world will require every sector especially the education sector to transform digitally. Though it was already happening the pace has to be increased exponentially. The world requires more engineering graduates who can help steer this new digital world.
