Tom and Arista had not planned to go to the carnival together, but when Arista asked if he was going--Tom knew he couldn’t say no. He should say no, but he didn’t want to. He had been avoiding Arista ever since his flimsy excuse about why he had suddenly disappeared (a death in the family.) That excuse would only hold up so long. 

Plus...Tom missed her. Maybe her sunny smile could clear some of the storm clouds in his chest. 

So, he stood, fiddling awkwardly with his phone by one of the game booths (the one with the ducks). He was watching a few people fishing for the ducks on magnetic fishing poles when he saw a flash of golden hair and looked up to see Arista gliding towards him.

“Hullo,” he greeted, opening up one of his arms for a hug as he tucked his phone back into his pocket with his other hand. “You been here long?”

Hi fiel! You have a great taste in films! I was just wondering how your interest in film started? I noticed you were also interested in the art of film and I also would like to know that sort of thing. Do you have any tips? Thank you!!

Thank you! I think it was in 2010--the year of my biggest obsession with River Phoenix and Scream and postmodernism, etc--when I really started taking movies seriously, you know, really seeking them out and figuring out what I like and which actors and directors and writers I admire. My perspective on the whole field really broadened after that. It was a combination of reading movie plots on Wikipedia and following blogs with great taste and having access to torrents that really did it.

As for film as an art and process, I've never really dabbled in it per se, and if I ever did, I think I'd definitely be more inclined to screenwriting than directing, though I've always wanted to experiment with it, I've just never had the means. I have no clue about the technical stuff behind it, just vague amateur ideas. Hope you can pursue it though if you really want to! 

Where do you post your stories?

Kind of all over the place. A lot of them are here, although my prose and short stories, etc are kind of inconsistently tagged. I should fix that. 

Admit Two has a really interesting thing going on...how'd you come up with it? I want to listen to the songs so badly! Finish soon, please.

Thanks! I wish the songs were real, myself. I can only imagine how some of them would sound--the others, I can't even conjure fully. 

I started writing it when I was in Singapore. I think I was aiming for something like "Anatomy of a Playlist," but something that had a specific framing device for each part. I was thinking about Will, you know, and how we'd spent quite some time with each other at concerts, and what would have happened if we'd had more of that. Immediately I got this image in my head of two childhood best friends--because we all know I'm always into the idea of that--and their one favorite band, how they come of age across a series of rock shows. I wondered how much I could tell and say and put within a single night, and another night years after that, and so on. What changed and what remained the same. 

Honestly, I can't remember the exact train of thought that led to it, but I'm glad it happened. 

As for finishing it [makes apologetic frustrated silent-groan-y face]...we'll get there.
