Adolfo haunts the narrative.
IN THIS ESSAY I WILL

First off, what exactly IS the definition of the trope: "haunting the narrative"? Well, according to most of the research I've gather from different characters in media and various websites and video essays, the best and simplest definition I can give is that a character who haunts the narrative is one whose presence heavily affects the trajectory and events of the story, especially the characters, despite never actually appearing in the present. They may be seen through flashbacks or other characters talking about them, but we, the audience, never actually get to see who that character was or what they were like, only from the perspectives of others can we truly piece up who they are.
One of the most famous examples I can give of this trope is Rose Quartz from Steven Universe, because we never actually saw her, only from flashbacks, recalling memories, and the perspectives of other characters, yet her very existence is what made the story in the first place.
So, why do I say that Adolfo haunts the narrative?

Well, 2 very simple reasons actually
1. Where's Adolfo
Adolfo, despite being the MAIN ANTAGONIST, never actually appears. He is mentioned multiple times by both Florante and Laura, however never once do we actually get to see the true person that Adolfo actually is. Only through mainly Florante do we get to know how much a monstrous and terrifying villain he is. Even in the end, we never witness his death. Is is just merely told by Laura and Flerida explaining how they met.

2. Holy Grudge Holder??
Just stated before, but Adolfo is the main antagonist. And I tell you, 90% of the story wouldn't have happened if it weren't for Adolfo's actions. This all started because Florante was getting better at him in academics, so he starting acting spiteful. He quite literally tried murdering him live, and when that didn't work, he decided to MURDER HIS FATHER along with THE KING and try stealing & raping his girlfriend (and there's a 75% possibly that Florante was STILL in grieving over his mother's death). All this shit started because Adolfo was acting petty by the way, just a reminder. There is quite literally no doubt he is a MAJOR FACTOR of the story. We learn that he does all of this THROUGH FLORANTES LENSES. We may have not actually seen or met Adolfo, but judging purely by Florante's experience alone, we can see just how integral he is to the plot.

^Also on a completely unrelated note CAN WE TAKE A MOMENT TO TALK ABOUT LAURA IN THIS SCENE?? SHE LOOKS SO SCARED/UPSET :(( I will never understand people who make her like Adolfo instead of Florante just so they can have their sinaunang yaoi bullshit but nywyz
Short Conclusion: Adolfo can technically be, and probably should be, considered a character who haunts the narrative. He checks out the two requirements perfectly, never appearing and having a massive effect on the other characters and the plot. And holy shit did he have a lasting effect.
Show us all your silly little guys~
Here's the current roster (I am admittedly pretty slow at making miis so we've got less than 20) <:) In order, from left to right;
Top Row: Roxy, Trixie, Chrono, Tibi, Rue, Mort, Kletus, Mickey Nick, Torque Middle Row: Adolfo, Sparks, Kitty, Mads, Clocky, Caleb, Percival Bottom Row: Poppin, Fizzles, Hawthorne
Fizzles, Poppin, Hawthorne, and Mads are all sonas of mine; Kitty and Clocky are sonas belonging to my little sibling and partner (in that order); Sparks, Caleb, Adolfo, and Percival were the four original player-characters in our Mothership Campaign (I played Sparks!); Chrono and Kletus are ttrpg test characters that I and Clocky play (they are a set, do not separate); Rue, Tibi, and Mort are original characters for a thing I've called Blighton; Trixie, Roxy, and Mickey Nick are my Neopets; and Torque is a Jet Set Radio oc :)
Someone should make a fanart of Weiss punching Adam (RWBY)
