February is Adopt-a-Rabbit month! We'll be featuring our adoptable rabbits, and sharing rabbit info all month long! Rabbits are the third most popular pet in North America. They're also the third most abandoned pet. Shelters and rescues are always overflowing with bunnies, mostly because owners are not educated on their care and give up when they realize rabbits are not the easy "starter" pet they are made out to be. Rabbits can make great pets for the right home. They have a specific set of care requirements, and need a lot more space than the traditional hutch or cage. They can be litter trained and can live "free range" in your home just like a dog or cat! Also like a dog or cat, rabbits need to be spayed or neutered. A fixed bunny can live a longer, healthier life as the risk of cancers are greatly reduced. Spayed/neutered rabbits are also calmer, easier to litter train, and fixing allows more options for bonding to another bunny. A vet with rabbit specific training is needed for the spay/neuter surgery, and for general care. Rabbit savvy vets are not as easy to find as you'd think! A relationship with a specialized vet is very important. In some cases, once a rabbit shows even the slightest signs of illness, it can already be too late. These are just a few of the things to consider before choosing to share your home and heart with a rabbit. If you're willing to put the time and care, they can be a wonderful companion for many years. They're affectionate and funny little fuzzies, and it's worth the extra effort to give them the kind of life they deserve. Always remember to adopt! Don't shop!
