Okay, but all fucking jokes aside.......the precedent we’ve set in the last few years is fucking terrible.

1) The first woman to get to direct a movie with a 100+ million dollar budget blew it in so many ways despite being one of the best working female writer/director of the last fifty years. (Ava and “A Wrinkle In Time”)

2) The first woman to get to help a major “franchise” that was supposed to be a the first in a string of movies shat the bed so epically that the studio straight up just pulled on any and all sequels. (Elizabeth with “Charlie’s Angels”)

3) The woman in charge of the first major wlw Christmas studio movie did...well...THAT. (Clea with “Happiest Season”)

These where three major opportunities to show that female writer/directors can and should be playing at the same level as the men in the field and yet they were spectacular bombs all around. These three things are fodder for studios to not allow women to helm major productions. This is the shit they will use as excuses for why women can’t be in charge of tentpoles. It’s fucking frustrating because what are the odds that Ava drops the ball on the biggest project she gets? The other two were just absolutely the wrong choices for these opportunities. Elizabeth did a decent enough job directing but that script should’ve been burned and gotten a page one rewrite the moment it was finished. That script should’ve never gotten approved and to know it got through so many hands before production and they all thought that was good says so much about the bad taste prevalent in execs. Clea just...sucks lol. There’s so many capable women out there who could’ve taken the Charlie’s Angels franchise and done something with it. There’s a slew of better filmmakers that could’ve made the first sapphic Christmas movie and not produced a shitfest. Yet these two white women got to do instead and it’s just proof that white women are allowed to fail up then fuck up and make it harder for the rest of us women of color to get the same opportunities. This is aggravating on so many fucking levels. It is.

Marsha Stephanie Blake was literally right there. They gave her award to a white woman who couldn't touch her with that performance instead.

Chernobyl was PHENOMENAL but there was NOT ONE SINGLE FUCKING SERIES better directed than When They see us this year. Ava DuVernay set a completely different standard for directing TV this year. Ava DuVernay BROKE THE GAME. They gave her award to a straight white man instead.

So this is the night When They See Us gets ripped off, huh? I see how it is.

I'm not going to say that Ava DuVernay is the best female writer/director ever because the film + television industry has failed and continue to fail female content creators in such a way that we will never know the brilliance that has not been given a chance to shine but what I can say with definite certainty is that Ava is an absolute master at what she does. "When They See Us" is irrefutable proof of that.

I'm putting this in writing now and will continue to echo it for months to come, if this doesn't win every category across the board at every single award show it is eligible for come next award season then we will need no further example of how award shows are as political, rigged, and unfair as the New York criminal justice system that spectacularly failed these five men. What a travesty that was but out of it came the absolute gem that is this miniseries and that is possibly the one spec of good in it. Even though I am certain we would all trade a tv show to not have had this gross miscarriage of justice happen, in some way I'm also glad whatever got us here transpired and that the show exists because "When They See Us" is a fucking masterclass in what incomparably outstanding storytelling and filmmaking is. Beyond that it, the show also serves as an educational experience for those who still refuse to see the racist dumpster fire that is the American legal system.

If you haven't watched "When They See Us" yet do yourself a favor and run to it. It's only four episodes long, you can do it in a single afternoon and come out of the other end better for it. The directing, the writing, the acting, the editing, the cinematography, the soundtrack, the everything...it's all fucking flawless. There is no one fault to find here. Not one. Not a single one.

I will say I think the Harley Quinn movie was actually great for the action movie it was aiming to be and it's no coincidence that we got it from a woc. With the exception of whatever happened to Ava with aWiT I think it's safe to say trust only woc to get shit done right at this point.

Haven’t watched the HQ movie and refuse to but I’m done seeing white women do shit at this point. Y’all are being put on ice until further notice. Take a break, let us take the lead for a change.
