Chest 1: One need only glance at the history of the upper echelons of Nilfgaardian aristocracy, or the dog-eat-dog hierarchies of the Novigradian underworld, to understand plainly that those who rise to the top are often those willing to do what others wouldn’t even dare dream of. When one is free from the restraints of compassion and conscience, almost anything is possible, it would seem. Yet, those who play such dangerous games should be wary, for ambitious men—like moths scorched by the fateful allure of a flame—often dance with death during their ascent to the top. And thus, all those eager to realize such lofty ambitions will do well to remember the adage: the higher one climbs, the harder one falls.
Chest 2: Indeed, the right word in the right ear at the right time can sway the course of history. And so too can an inspirational speech—one, say, that captures the hearts and minds of a ragtag bunch of outcasts, stirring their spirits and forging in them an enduring bond of loyalty and respect. Yet, one should not mistake an idea with its execution. Often enough, those who talk more do less. In an attempt to seize glories yet earned, words can effortlessly spew forth from a zealous tongue, allowing visions of grandeur to usurp the tangible act of pursuing the task at hand. Thus, the legends of prominent leaders are seldom forged by words alone; instead solidified by the collective acknowledgement of their deeds and accomplishments. It is a mere irony that such feats are often only learned about through texts on a page, or by word of mouth.
Chest 3: In life, all have a part to play. While most are assigned lifelong roles, stuck with whatever ill-fated hand they’re dealt, some are fortunate—or wily—enough to shape their own performance. To recast their persona until the slipper fits, so to speak. Throughout the Continent, many figures have forged new identities for themselves in order to pursue a grander purpose. Or to secure more power and wealth, at least. It has often been argued by savants of sociopolitical studies that most of the common folk are inexorably drawn to those who embody their ideals of success—those that exude, often publicly, the quality of life so desperately sought after by the rank and file. And when the average life is a drab existence of misery and misfortune, who can blame them for seeking a beacon of hope amid the darkness. Whether or not such a beacon is a facade… Well, that makes not the slightest bit of difference, for a solitary fantasy, if convincing enough, can transform a thousand realities.
Scroll 1: The Continent has been wrought by the actions of countless leaders—the virtuous and the villainous alike. Their accumulative deeds, both small and grand, good and bad, are etched into the texture of the land’s history, indubitably shaping the world as we now know it, for better or worse.
Scroll 2: From commanders and conspirators to rulers and renegades, all leaders, from the righteous to the reprobate, know one simple truth: a world without change is a world left behind—for one cannot advance a society without first challenging the status quo.
Scroll 3: Thus, a leader must incite change. And, for that, they must inspire. Uniting their people towards a common cause—whether that be fame, fortune, or freedom—they must, through the strength found within a solidarity of purpose, turn grand visions into reality.
Scroll 4: For, if one cannot make manifest their vision of a better world, if one’s unable to motivate their people, or command loyalty, or rouse change, then one—no matter their position or power—is simply no leader at all.
