Evaluation
What went well for you this project? I think in the end the app designs I have created have worked quite well as they stand out and I think the layout looks appropriate like an existing app design.
How have you developed your skills with research and analysis during this project? Whilst I was researching I found a lot of inspirational poster designs, which really helped when I was designing my own. I think this helped develop my skills in designing posters and other parts of the process.
What were the most challenging aspects of this project? I think coming up with an initial campaign idea was the most challenging, as thinking of a good idea is never my strong point. However, after a few crits I finally came up with a strong idea and was able to get on with the design part of the task, which is what I am best at.
What would you do differently if you were to do this project again I would manage my time more efficiently and make sure I have crits earlier on so that I could have come up with a good idea earlier on in the process.
Out of 100% (below 40% being a fail and above 70% being a 1st) what grade would you award yourself for this assignment? Please give a brief and honest explanation as to why. If I were to grade myself I would probably give myself 60-65%. Although I only came up with my idea quite late, once I was organised with it I worked through the design process to the best of my ability and came up with some really nice strong designs.
Poster Development
After gathering all my research into the typographic poster designs that I found the most inspiring, I decided to start working on my own hand-drawn posters. I experimented a lot with making my own typeface and ended up making 3 different designs. However, when put onto posters they didn't work and I wasn't seeing anything that I particularly liked and that I thought would make an interesting, successful poster. Therefore, I started working on posters using existing type-faces and playing around a lot with the layout of the words. During research, I found that I really like the posters that use larger text to show hierarchy in the most important words. I think this is an effective idea that catches your eye, as you read the most important, and then read the rest of the poster. I started making some designs in this way, keeping them simple and straight to the point of what my campaign is.
Venture Arts
The aim for this brief is to raise awareness and to encourage people to donate to Venture Arts, which is a charity that supports people who have a learning disability to play a valued role within the contemporary arts world. I have decided to create a social media based campaign for this, as this is the way in which most information regarding charities gets the most exposure. My idea is to create an App named ‘Do you accept the challenge?’ which people would download from the app store. The donation to Venture Arts will be the cost of the app. Once downloaded, you would have to make a profile, choose a category and accept the challenge to complete a dare and post on social media. The photographs/video would have the hashtag #ventureartschallenge which would be spreading awareness of the charity and the reasons for completing the dare and donating. People will also be able to nominate friends from the app to take part in downloading it and sharing a dare.
