Louis, meanwhile, is struggling to make friends in his new apartment in a brand new town. Nobody in the building will return his friendly gestures, but at least the cute guy down the hall makes eye contact with him sometimes (after being caught staring just a little creepily, yes, but beggars can't be choosers).

Bound: The Complete Advent Fics by Saras_Girl

I just wanted to make this for my friend @cailynwrites because she's always been so generous with her podfic knowledge and she mentioned once something about loving Saras_Girl's advent fics and BOY am I hoping I didn't misremember that. Oh wait, I know, I think it was her desert island fic. Again, I hope my memory didn't lead me astray. It's just like me to embark on a massive project like this without double checking.

ANYWAY.

This is another tabloid folio-sized bind, just like my GallaPlacidia anthology. It has even more pages! What a beaut.

I made my own bookcloth out of some fabric I'd bought a while back to make a Christmas tree skirt, and then I got a Christmas tree skirt on clearance a couple of years ago so now I don't need to make one. It's fun and Christmassy without being too Christmassy, I think.

I used printable HTV for the title on the front and the spine. I also added in an oxford hollow to give it a bit more support because it is so heavy.

And because the type is pretty small, I included a little magnifying glass in the package. 🔎

I'm just excited to finally get to post this, I finished it a couple of months ago, but I had to wait to send it. It's just as well, now we're that much closer to Christmas!

December 16th - Celery for hey-cupcake

Ace began to watch the Doctor. Oh she always had, trying to learn his little tricks, to out guess him with whatever plan he had going on in the background at that minute, but now, after Gabriel Chase… now she watches for, well, burnt toast and bus stations. She thinks she knows him well enough by now that she knows he wouldn't just up and tell her what he truly hates (although tyranny and cruelty, she knows, despair him from their time together.) But bus stations? They don't exactly frequent those, unless one could count space ports as like, the future flashed up version, but she does know from her world that future versions aren't necessarily too flashed up. And the TARDIS won't let her burn the toast. Won't let her burn anything, really, spoilsport. But she watches him, and as always, knows that he is also watching her.

It's a pub, of the all the stupid things. Hot day, and they're lounging outside, when a barmaid carries her over a bloody mary, with compliments of the gentleman over that way. She throws the guy a grin and lifts the drink before turning back to the Doctor and making clear she's already, well not taken obviously, gross, but accompanied. She thinks he's making a pained face at the drink, which she's pleased to notice, has a good slug of vodka in it, but it's not like he's actually told her they're meant to be watching out for anything alien or suspicious, but when she clunks the drink down on the wooden table and pulls the celery out from where it had been tickling her cheek, he almost recoils from it.

Her eyes narrow, flick between the celery (innocent, but for the traces of tomato juice and vodka) and the Doctor, carefully looking out over the green the pub is set up by. Interesting. She plays it safe, takes a crunch out of the end (can't waste good vodka when the Doctor is always on her tail about having a nice drink) and he is unnaturally still. Well then. She can't help it though, points the bitten end at him, grins, and asks

"Do you want a bite then, Professor?"

"No thank you, Ace," he says, and his voice chills the air around them.

"Aw c'mon," and he shivers, and she'd kill to learn how to make overexaggeration as subtle as he does then, but she can tell the difference between fake drama and real unease by now.

"Did I ever tell you about Mel's fascination with vegetable juices?" And she shakes her head, though for the short time she knew Mel, well, she could see it. "Didn't quite cause my regeneration, but she did her best with blended celery." He shivers, an exaggerated recoil at the thought, but she's wise to him.

"Uh-huh," she says, unconvinced, and knows the Doctor knows it too when he claps his thin hands together, a sudden punctuation to their idle afternoon.

"Well then, Ace, things to do. There's a concert on tonight I rather thought you might enjoy, and we can't spend all day here."

She picks her drink up and sculls it, ignoring the Doctor's disapproving hum. The celery she leaves on the table, sitting between them. "As long as there are no spoons involved," she warns, and the Doctor catches her face in his hand as she stands, and bonks her gently on the nose.

It's a good concert, in spite of the violins, and she sort of remembers hearing some of their stuff on the radio when she was a kid, but it's not as good as a distraction as the Doctor thinks it'll be. Not when she's finally got her teeth into something solid. And she's got a plan, too.

When they're back on the TARDIS, and the Doctor is still humming along to the music in his head, somehow covering the three different harmonies in a way that makes her head hurt, she makes her excuses, claims being around all the old fogies who liked that music have made her need a nap. Really, she's off to the rooms the TARDIS occasionally throws up in the smaller and twistier corridors past the living quarters. Rooms full of hundreds of years worth of souvenirs and memories, dusty boxes that strain at the corners with amount of loose papers and photographs stuffed into them. She's spent hours in these rooms, wasting time while the Doctor's off doing god only knows what the TARDIS inners and doesn't want interruptions, and she's found old ID cards for 'John Smith' of something called UNIT, and that old man frowning at the camera obviously isn't her Doctor, but there's something in his eyes that make her sure that he's the same man. She's found all kinds of photos with all kinds of people and aliens, and in some of them the same man crops up, turned half away from the camera. Or he's blond or brunette, in black and white newsprint or technicolour paintings that she has to squint at like a magic picture to see anything. She's not been so determined to work something out since she discovered what a big bang chemistry could make.

She finds it in a box she's sure she has looked through before. A black and white photograph of a cricket team tucked into the dullest type of book known to either man or alien - a history of charity cricket games. A cricket team with a man she's seen from other photos smack bang in the middle of it. For all it's framed as one of those very serious photos from the 20s or 30s, the man is grinning, and tucked under each of his arms are two women, one grinning just as wide as he is, another looking at the camera as if it might bite her. A boy definitely not in cricket whites is frowning beside her while everyone else has those polite smiles of old period tv shows. But what she's really after, nearly concealed by the curls of the grinning woman, is the unmistakable curl of celery leaves, and she shoves it triumphantly in her pocket.

It's not enough yet to confront the Doctor, but Ace knows she's failing to conceal her excitement when, the next time she sees him in the kitchen, boiling the kettle, he looks at her with a frown and his gaze zeroes in on her pocket as if he can see right through to the contents. She grins, gives him a 'wotcha', and swoops in for a mug of tea that she whisks back off to her room where her collection of cups is growing a bit concerningly. Her next aim is for the wardrobe - which isn't so much of a wardrobe as another series of overstuffed boxes and poles crammed with too many coathangers, but she's poked around enough to pull out a few outfits by now. But now she's on the hunt. The jacket was definitely a light colour, a bright beacon between what she thinks must be have been his old travelling companions, so she looks out everything bright and old fashioned.

But there are boxes upon boxes filled with dresses, shirts of every colour and some bits she doesn't even recognise. Butterfly costumes and clown masks, full length striped victorian bathing suits and velvet jackets, several of which she lays aside, because they could be fun with fishnets and a tshirt. It's finally under a pile of little bracelets with clips attached she finds it. Like her grandma's old fashioned garter belts, but smaller, they almost hide the warm yellow with red piping. Same stupid jacket the Professor is wearing in that old photo. It's grubby, not like most of the clothing in here which despite the mess, are clean and uncreased. But this one has dirt all over one shoulder, like it got left behind and never thought of again. But she's not sure now. It seems… sad, and she doesn't know whether this is something she should pry into. She remembers the sharp betrayal of finding out they were in Gabriel Chase, whether the Doctor would feel the same way about this. His own past dredged up like this. She takes the photograph, the four grinning anachronisms in the middle of cricket team, and slips it in the pocket of the grubby jacket. Leaves them all together in the past.

That doesn't stop her from taking up a sudden habit of snacking on celery whenever she and the Doctor end up in the kitchen at the same time. After all, what's a little psychological warfare amongst friends?

As the seconds passed, Harry seemed to realize the lack of space between them, his eyes growing less piercing and more irritated as he scanned Louis' face. ~ Louis had his heart set on rooming with his best friend Zayn, but fate—or a cruel housing assignment—stuck him with Harry, who seems to hate him instantly (and boy, is that feeling mutual). Determined to find a way out, Louis quickly realizes that their fiery clashes only make things worse, fueling the hostility between them. Yet, as tempers flare and boundaries blur, their battles take an unforeseen turn, shifting into something neither of them expected.
