GEOCACHING!

It’s a treasure hunt thing using a GPS app on your phone!  I did my first one today!

I did one near my house - it looked like it was going to be in a wooded area just off the road. After a few minutes tromping around and swatting mosquitoes, I noticed a car had parked near me and was running, and the man inside it was watching me. Well, I figured, I kind of look like a suspicious trespasser or something, he’s probably just trying to figure out what I’m doing.

So I tromp around in circles for a few more minutes, getting more and more bitten by mosquitoes, and finally I decide to give up and start walking back home. And the guy calls out from his car “You’re really close!”

And I look back and say “Wha-...you mean-...um, you mean to the geocache?”

“Yeah!”

Oh! Okay, um. Back into the trees! I bump around for another minute or two, and the car guy yells out some more hints (“Not that way, turn around!” “You don’t have to go trailblazing, it’s near the road!”), and I find it! 

It turns out the guy was actually the one who hid the thing! And that he was on his way home from the monthly meeting of the local geocaching group!* And he just happened to see me bumbling around squinting at my phone and under bushes and thought “Hey, that’s a geocacher!” And he gave me a Geocoin and invited me to the next group meeting!

I signed onto Geocaching.com under the name OrdinaryDoodles and I have a new hobby.

*It’s called S.T.R.A.N.G.E., which is awesome.
