I am going to my first real therapy session tomorrow and I am so terrified. I know it'll be fine and it's good that I'm going to have names for the things going on in my head but simultaneosly I am so scared to let everything out. I've done such a good job building walls around my problem that I don't even know what they look like anymore. In 11 hours I have to be there and I can't even sleep right now help
First of all, I am REALLY glad to hear that you are making the effort and taking the steps needed to get help, it’s a huge sign of strength that you recognize the issue, and recognize it’s enough of an issue that you need extra help to deal with it. And there is NOTHING wrong with that.
I’ve suffered with depression for a long time and have just ignored it most of my life. During a semester at college it got so bad I couldn’t stand it and I went to go see a counselor. I was terrified just like you are. I was like “wow this is pathetic” “why am I even doing this” “this is so dumb”. But it was incredibly eye opening. Being able to freely speak your feelings is very freeing and allows you to just et everything off your chest.
It is very scary, I know. The idea of confiding such big, personal things in a stranger is a very scary concept. We don’t know them, and they don’t know us. But honestly, I find it’s easier opening up to a stranger than someone you’re close with. Try to relax. Listen to calming music, have a soothing cup of tea, and just breathe. Everything will be alright, I promise you that.
You’ll be able to face the core issues head on, learn what causes them, and how to deal with them. I won’t lie, it’s a very emotional experience, especially when things start making sense to you. It just sort of hits you like a ton of bricks like “oh okay, that’s why I feel this way” (or act this way). I honestly wish you the best of luck and I will be thinking of you. As always, I am here and would love to hear how it goes tomorrow.
